Paul1977: If Disney did a fresh remaster of the original trilogy without all the special edition rubbish it would sell like crazy. There would have to be millions of people who haven't bought the blu-rays, but would if they were the original cuts.

Yep, although I'm not sure whether I can trust Disney to do it properly. It doesn't help that there are so many versions! Even of the first movie:

1977 - Original theatrical
1981 - Re-release with "Episode IV - A New Hope" added to opening
1982 - Original home video release, some scenes (such as the "canyon" scene near the beginning) brightened to work better on a home TV

Apparently the 1993 LaserDisc is the closest to theatrical, although I'm not so clear about the differences there. Then of course we have the 1997 Special Edition, the 2004 DVD, and 2011 Blu-rays, each with their own changes.

Behodar: Yes, but the official Blu-rays are such an old transfer that Harmy's 720p versions look as good as the 1080p Blu-rays.

I have downloaded them, but haven't gotten around to watching.

rumours started as soon as lucas sold out to the mouse.

i still have a set of the 93 thx non-special laserdiscs, unfortunately even on a high end laserdisc player, they are near unwatchable.

unlike audio, video playback has definitely improved since the 1990s.

Watching 3 movies takes a long time. In the case of the prequels I'd be pretty keen on an edit that speeds things up a bit.
I think it would be easy to do, to cram that lot into 2 movies.

Thinking things like cut a bunch of bits out of the establishment era, like cut the pod race in half and that stupid factory convey belt/bucket scene, now we don't need it to sell tie in merchandise like ps1 games etc.
Cut out that freaky guy who looks like a stalker of the princess through that whole middle movie. Or CGI a decent actor over the top. Man I hate that actor.

Remove anything too CGI ish. That should shave us down to a pretty good Vader back story in a couple of hours or so.
Seriously though, I watched that yoda fight the other day and it's just so %$#*, there's really no other way to put it.
I remember them being so proud of achieving shots where it was 95% early craptastic computer graphics, and you look back and it just looks like a crappy playstation game.

And what's with the ship design being all organic and fluid and then 10 years later being all blocky and basic, wow what a huge fashion change in that galaxy far far away.

As long as the "Episode IV - A New Hope" title was the only change, then the 1981 re-release probably makes the most sense. It is part of a series, and that doesn't effect the content of the movie at all.

I don't even have a problem with them cleaning up special effects and tweaking colour timing etc, as long as it doesn't look out of place. It's when they add/change shots in a way that looks out of place, and when they change scenes so that it effects the way the scene plays that I can't stand.

Darth Vader yelling "Noooooo!!!" at the end of Return of the Jedi turned him from staunch dude into sooky cry-baby.

It might make sense, but the purists will complain. If Disney supplies an accurate 1977 release then the purists will have no excuses :)
