Dare I say it, I actually love the ritual, the smell of fresh ground beans, a little effort perhaps, but the reward (much nicer coffee than Nespresso) is worth it.
We use about 1kg of beans per 10 days, two coffee drinkers in the house, plus friends and guests. To make that much coffee using Nespresso pods would cost an extra $3,000 per year. That sounds a lot, but pods are only single shot, 5 double shots per day average (I have two) and it soon adds up.
Plan for the future is to experiment with roasting.

I got a push button and coffee happens jura last year. Not touched the nespresso compatible machine much since then. Used it for about a week when the jura was demanding some cleaning tablet run thru it which I had put away "somewhere safe" and it was still ok.

I got the D... G... machine at the warehouse (cant spell it, CBF googling) because I like its hot chocolate, its the closest to the nice maccas one I have found. And as maccas is on my sh*tlist for screwing up too many orders Im not going there for breakfast now.

Reality is that Nespresso coffee is consistently good when compared to the average coffee we get on the street. In Wellington there's plenty of coffee but good coffee is the exception and most will be overextracted, burnt or stale. Nespresso coffee does not taste stale.

If you want convenience then Nespresso will do it. If you want the ritual, then get a proper espresso machine. But most people even with a great coffee machine will still extract crappy tasting coffee unless they do some training. Just using the right machine and coffee won't automatically give you exceptional coffee. Just go with Nespresso and get good coffee.

People should have realised this by now. Not everyone is a trained barista. And even trained baristas screw up.

I find coffee in Wellington is generally better than in Auckland but I haven't tried the coffee at a certain moderators Café. I agree regarding the consistency of Nespresso coffee.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Cost is a consideration

From a $6.99 200g bag of beans and assuming a 8g serving a per serve coffee cost of .27c
From a Select $6.99 16 x 8g capsules at a per serve coffee cost of 0.44c

Basically the cost of using capsules is almost double at least by my math

note often I can get 200g of beans on sale for $6 and FairTrade at that

Thats why I like the capsules for my hot chocolate. Quicker than boiling the kettle and stuff.

An overdose of cheap laxative costing about $0.05 might save me a couple of "wasted" minutes a day, but try thinking of life as a journey - not a destination- and enjoy the ride.

I have to agree with this.

My every day drinking coffee is Jeds No 5 beans fresh ground and made in a cafetiere if I am home alone, or a drip filter machine (into an insulated jug with no hotplate to burn the coffee) if Er Indoors is here as well. Jeds 5 is very strong and makes great joe with just a splash of cold milk.

Picked up a bargain Nespresso machine last weekend - barely used shop model Latissima + for $500. Promptly removed and put away the milk bit and found that 2 capsules on the long setting with a splash of milk is a nice kickstart.

Mind you, I think Loperamide would be a better way to save that time than laxative. With careful use, you can cut visits to the small room to once every 3 days!

Mind you, I think Loperamide would be a better way to save that time than laxative. With careful use, you can cut visits to the small room to once every 3 days!

You'd probably need to work it out with a pencil like a mathematician - scrawling notes about fluid dynamics and chaos theory on 2 ply.

Nice to know, I assume this only applies to Nespresso capsules

Here is a link but it seems unclear whether these facilities are used by the collection points in NZ and if so they would have to ship them to Europe

My experience in NZ with grade 6-7 plastics is they get shipped to China...

Not if you use these guys honestcoffee.co.nz 100% biodegradable and comparable with Nespresso for taste

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I used the term coffee machine wrong, hence why the earlier posts were saying $300 isn't enough. I did mean a Nespresso machine type machine yes.

She is going to go out tomorrow and have a look, see if anything sticks out to her.
