Hi guys,

My mum wants to buy a coffee machine, but doesn't really have an idea on what to get.

$300 Budget and has to be able to "froth up the drinks"

Thanks

Nespresso U, Inissia or something similar. They come with the Nespresso Aeroccino which froths milk

These are pod machines and are no fuss, no mess and very easy to use give good quality, consistant coffee.

If you (or your mother) can cope with the colour, Farmers has the organge one on sale at the moment for $100, online only (http://a.smartmailpro.com/link/h322cq516/c4df96qt5m) . But I've just checked and it looks like it's out of stock on-line, but never know it may come back in.

Unless your mum wants to make her own, which means she needs to be able to clean the machine, grind the beans, steam the milk etc....then I'd recommend a nespresso - especially at that price point.

Totally agree - I'd not feel comfortable "recommending" any espresso machine capable of frothing milk at that price point.

If she wants to do a cafe-style coffee, then a good machine by Breville or DeLonghi would do the job, but she'll need to learn how to froth the milk and tamp the ground coffee into the group head etc. Ground coffee can be bought in sufficiently small quantities that it won't go off.

Personally, I enjoy playing Barista at home and I have a Breville machine that has a built in conical burr grinder etc, so I have lots of fun making whirring and grinding and frothing noises whilst making my coffee (much to the annoyance of the rest of my household), but mine is a long way outside her budget.

My picks, if she wants to go down this route are:

Breville Cafe Venezia

DeLonghi Dedica

or a Nespresso machine as mentioned above:

DeLonghi Nespresso machine

We have the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto machine.  It's often on sale between $50 and $100 and have been pretty happy with it.
It's the basic model.

I'm interested in the Nespresso Inissia at that price, but personal choice really comes into it.
A family member has this and prefers the Hot Chocolate especially from the Dolce Gusto machine for example.

I wonder if this is eligible for the cash back too?

Although, looks like it's out of stock basically everywhere in Auckland now.

If you check the link you have posted you will see that the inissia is included in the cash back laughing

So it makes it a really good deal if you can get your hands on one. I have a brand new one in the box (red) to sell (Lower Hutt)

Just had a call from farmers and they were able to get one for me (I emailed them at 9am this morning asking if they had any more).

So very happy, don't know if it will be a present or we will use it here.

Some of these machines appear to be a bit like inkjet printers, where they give the machine away chealy but you need to buy capsuales, which appear to be an expensive way to buy coffee. I find plunger coffee to be just as good and quick, and cheaper. But people like to have a machine in their kitchen to look good. I do ahve an expensive machine too with a steam frother, but don't really use it as a hassle to clean. For a milk frother, you can get a manual one similar to a coffee plunger which you plung up and down to froth, and it works just as well as an expensive steam one.
