Try telling SWMBO that the date to come day is Epiphany 6th January and see if the good luck happens. Even better, it will be a Sunday this year so it will be a thing to do during that long weekend.

aka the Twelvth Night (after Christmas).

I married an elf (unless "Christmasoholic" is a word?) so we have three trees.

Two are fake plastic trees (apologies to Radiohead): an eight footer in the lounge and a six footer in the entrance inside the front door. Complex local elf rules decree that these two trees have to be up for all of December, so they get put up on December 1st if that's a Saturday or Sunday, or on the last Sunday before December if the 1st is a weekday (so they went up yesterday). As we are usually away in early January they have to stay up until we get back, so they'll come down on 23rd/24th January this time around.

The third tree is a six foot non-collapsible steel frame wrapped in grapevines which stays up in a corner of the family room all year with LED seed lights on it, and gets ornaments added when the other two trees go up.

Having a discussion today with my mum about when the "Best time to put the Xmas Tree up" is.

When do you put yours up?

Personally for me, it has to be at least December. I normally put mine up two weeks, give or take, before Xmas day, then leave it up until just after New Years.

How about you? When is the best time? Do you already have yours up? What does your tree look like?

We don't have a set time. We put it up either when we feel like it or someone can be arsed doing it.

This year, we went to Mitre 10 yesterday and found one of those fake trees with fibre-optic lights all through the branches....and it changes colours frequently.

Had to have it.

Having got it home, we had to set it up to see what it looked like. It looked cool. So we hung stuff on it. It looks cooler.

So....our tree went up on November 29th because we thought it might look really cool.

But next year it might not go up until the week before Xmas. Or whenever.

Now...if you have REAL tree.....then you need to be aware of how long it can remain something other than a source of pine needles and mess...and a possible fire hazard. Two weeks - one either side of Xmas.

I wish our house was big enough to take 3 Christmas trees! One of the great things about the chore of taking the tree down and packing it away is the reclamation of floor space. Almost like a late present each year.

I just can't do fake trees. The smell of a real pine tree is so evocative of childhood memories of Xmas, despite them not smelling as strongly as they used to, so having one in the lounge is a critical component of Christmas for me. Luckily my wife - who suffers badly from hay fever - is willing to pop many pills to humour my preferences!

So we'll usually buy a tree about 7-10 days before Xmas to ensure it's still in good condition on the 25th, and remove it a couple of days after.

We also have a pohututaka/rata cross in a pot outside that is usually flowering by Xmas; that has had solar white lights on it (that have cr@pped out like most solar lights), so this year I'll replace these with coloured ones for Xmas...

I was in The Warehouse on the weekend with the elf, er wife, who was buying some cheap Christmas novelties and candy canes to put on the table at a work Christmas lunch. I saw they have scented sticks (they had a cute name but I can't remember what it was) that you hang in the tree to make it smell of pine (disinfectant), spruce (miscellaneous toxic chemicals) or "Christmas spice" (elderly uncle's aftershave). Elf was keen, even though I was gagging...
