mattwnz: NZ media's definition of international news stories tends to be scanning stories around the world to see any link to NZ. Anything that has some link to NZ, such as a NZer appearing on Graham Norton, is fair game for the news.

Yes. It is reaching the level of "A man who once walked past someone who knew someone that had a friend who had been to New Zealand has died in an accident!"

Why do NZ TV news programs at 6.00  still need "Tweedledum and Tweedledee' to present the news??  Most overseas main network news is 30 minutes with one presenter..

Yes most overseas countries have a 30 minute news program - which includes National/International and Sport.

Usually around 50% Local&National/40% International and 10% sports - 60 seconds for the weather.

Our weather slot goes on so long I often miss it because I glaze over.....

On one hand its a good thing we know what is happening in the rest of the world, but sometimes I think this cheap 'padding' that we have to watch just starts messing with peoples heads.

I gather a little while back both channels were seriously considering trying to reach a mutual agreement to have a 30m main bulletin to reduce their costs but they are nervous of each other and no one wanted to go first.

There is an interesting link here http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/culture/tv-history/news on how things have changed.

Never mind voting on the flag....

TV News proposal

  • 30 minutes 'Main news' including sports and weather
  • 20 minutes of local/regional content

The BBC (in the UK not BBC World on Sky etc) get round this by having 'News' which details major UK news and International news and a separate local news program for 10 minutes or so after that which is region-specific with London & SE, the South West, The Grim North etc etc.

Local news does not get a look in on the main news unless it is of national significance as well. So your cat up a tree in Dunedin stories turn up on the bit that only your gran watches after the main news, relieving the rest of us from suffering through it!

The newshub app is kinda nice. I also watched the midday news on TV and the set looks fancy, quite BBC like

The app looks good, as does the TV set for the first 6pm offering. But the content on day one worries. The lead news story was more current affairs than news (anon customs officer says too many drugs getting into NZ due to understaffing). Later stories more news like. Time will tell, this jury is still out.

I started watching it half way through. WTF has changed? Nothing I can see. I was waiting for someone to f.up and refer to it as 3 news.

I think the only real proper news these days is Radio NZ, and this is speaking as a 30 something year old, which is probably not their main demo.

I feel exactly the same way.  I'm 24 and the main radio station in the car is now NewsTalk ZB.  I didn't realise how many old people had so many terrible ideas and opinions!  But they have the most comprehensive news segment second to none!

Watched News Hub last night. Same old same old, really, what was the point? Yes, the set looks awesome but the substance is still lacking.

Wow, mis heard lyrics here.  That line is actually "Waking up to find your love's not real"

Instead of "My muffs divine, it looks like this"

I always assumed it was about muffins...

The marketing feels like it was outsourced to an overseas agency. They're giving it a more detached, distant, impersonal feel of news services from large countries. The set design is very BBC.

Funny thing is, soon you will be one of those old people and your ideas and opinions will probably bear a lot more resemblance to theirs than you currently think they will...! wink
