They don't need altimeters. Lock on 4 or more GPS satellites gives you position in 3 dimensions.

They certainly do know your position in three dimensions so should be able to account for elevation. Without looking at the particular calculation of the device however you wouldn't know.

Yep, Had to explain to my mother to look out for them particularly around the top end of Wairau Road after she got a few tickets.

I've gotten one on that road but I usually set the cruise control to 50 and stop paying attention, Although I typically have to pull over to the side lane going up as it leads to a very large amount of angry people sitting behind me and anyone else in the car asking why I'm going so slow, No way that road should be anything lower than a 70.

Side note: Starting to get tempted to get tinting and racing stripes on the commodore so people stop thinking I'm a cop and slowing down as the stupidly loud exhaust doesn't seem to be stopping them.

Going up or down a 45 degree slope at a road speed of 100kph would give you a horizontal speed of 70kph.

You would need to be going up or down a 60 degree slope to get a halving of horizontal speed.

It is irrelevant anyway. We do not have streets with 45 degree slopes. The world's steepest street - yay for Dunedin - is only 19 degrees at its very steepest ('cording to wikiP) and that is enough to give an error in GPS speed of a whole huge 5% which means that in the real world your GPS is as accurate as you need.

Also, the GPS network can calculate your height. In terms of absolute height it is less accurate than in terms of horizontal position but in relative heights, it is good enough that some aircraft constructors have built systems to detect and display angle of bank and angle of pitch by measuring the relative GPS heights across wing-tips and from nose to tail. I am sure that the GPS speed shown on your phone does not take this into account - it does not need to - even on Baldwin Street but it certainly can measure your height.

And are those old speed cameras still working? I've always wanted to know how they operate technically, like how do they set the speed tolerance for all the cameras in NZ? Do they use mobile data to remotely send all the infringing images and information to the central police headquarters?

Yes, but largely useless based on the one that came fitted to my car at giving warning. Have usually seen the estima and started to slow down before it goes off.

That 50km/hr zone stays in place for miles as you head north out of Otorohanga in the Waikato. Roads wide as and all the houses are off driveways back up off the road. Caught me by surprise.

You want to try Lake Terrace coming into Taupo from the south. Most of the year the 70km/50km change over occurs near Makatu St but over Christmas/New Year it moves further out of town out past Richmond Ave. It's a real trap when you're used to it being closer to town.

Yeah they did, but I haven't been to school for 25 years, and I was not suggesting we have 45 degree roads, just picking numbers to demonstrate concept.

and Yes I agree with you, Don't speed then no ticket but this seems OTT

yes, North Shore, 55 in a 50, its really very annoying, to stop that one would need to be constantly staring at the speedo which is just silly if the point is safety.

thecatsgoolies: Mine was issued on 20th Jan. Mid week not in the holiday period. Infringement states alleged speed of 55 in 50 area. Got the ticket yesterday. Yes I was obviously speeding but a $30 ticket probably cost more to process and yes, on the shore and no where near a school.

Well you can't really call it revenue gathering then can you!
