WyleECoyoteNZ:

NZ sports Hall of Fame inductees:

  • Lance O'Sullivan (thoroughbred raving)

I heard the sport of raving has a lot of associated drug use. This is not a good example for the younger generation.

Raving has had drug use issues, thats correct, but its not just raving.  Boxing, cycling, many many sports.

I couldn't find any stats on players either but it seemed to me that if you include all the kids who play it must exceed the mainly adults who play golf.

As well as that you need money to play golf so there will be far more players kicking a ball around a dusty patch of grass in somewhere like Brazil than hitting a golf ball on a manicured green.

Totally agree it's football - I put soccer just to avoid any local confusion.

Oddly enough in the UK, an obviously football mad country, the most popular sport by a long way is apparently fishing although I'd put that in the pastime category like darts or snooker rather than sport.

Darts and Snooker are sports. They do world champs and that type of thing.

I see a pastime as a pleasurable activity, and sport is competition. Many pastimes for Jow Averages for fun are sports as well, like Motocross riding, BMX as two of many examples.

Golf is bit of an elitist sport imho, not cheap to get into or play..

The likes of Darts\snooker have professional players making a living from playing their chosen sport, so it's a professional sport

Nothing wrong with elitism. The All Blacks are elitist.
