I didn't want to hijack the Richie McCaw 'New Zealander of the Year' thread, so I've stared another one to discuss Tonight's Halberg Awards.

Catergoires as below:

High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year

  • Lauren Boyle (Swimming)
  • Linda Villumsen (Cycling)
  • Lisa Carrington (Canoeing)
  • Lydia Ko (Golf)

High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportsman of the Year

  • Dan Carter (Rugby)
  • Danny Lee (Golf)
  • Kane Williamson (Cricket)
  • Scott Dixon (Motorsport)

Microsoft Surface Team Of The Year

  • All Blacks (Rugby)
  • Blackcaps (Cricket)
  • Mens 49er's Peter Burling and Blair Tule (Sailing)
  • Men's Pair Hamish Bond and Eric Murray (Rowing)

Coach of the Year

  • Gordan Walker (Lisa Carrington Coach, canoeing)
  • Hamish Willcox (Peter Burling and Blair Tuke coach, sailing)
  • Mike Hesson (Blackcaps coach, cricket)
  • Steve Hansen (All Blacks coach, rugny)

Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Disabled Sportsperson of the Year

  • Corey Peters (Para skiing)
  • Michael Johnson (Para-shooting)
  • Nikita Howarth (Para-swimming)
  • Sophie Pascoe (Para-swimming)

The above categories winners are then eligible for the overall Halberg Award.

More information about the Halberg Awards here:

http://www.halbergawards.co.nz/

And a list of Past winners here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halberg_awards

All nominees are very deserving, it's going to interesting to watch to see who wins. Either way, it will be sure to create a lot of discussion.

I see that no NZ Breakers basket ball team again despite winning their 4th   NBL title..  Guess basket ball in NZ has a very low profile.

Thats the thing. Low profile means lower regard of the achievement, even if the achievement was more difficult than other nominees

They all tend to gravitate to the most well known, most famous, rather than the person/team that punched higher above their weight
