I know the very likely answer to this already, but on the OFF chance...

I am going to be in Berlin in Sept, and Turkey has always interested me from a food perspective, would I be completely insane going to Turkey under the current circumstances? It will be a very long time before I could get back there, but I am an even longer time dead!

Very much a shame, as not long ago ago it was a very interesting place to visit, generally safe, the people very warm, friendly and honest, many having a great deal of respect/liking for NZers (and Australians) in particular. In the tourist areas you may have been hassled to buy a carpet, but if you made the point that you didn't want to buy anything, and answered that you were a NZer, then chances are that you'd be invited in anyway, for tea and some snacks, to sit down and talk, meet the family, learn to pronounce a little turkish (very difficult), find out about good places to go etc. Left that situation a few times with one of their young children as a tour guide to take you around the sights of a village, they'd refuse reward, the "deal" was the child could practice their english. Not sure how you'd feel about "loaning" your 8YO child for a few hours to a couple of tourists you'd just met, but such was the level of trust we enjoyed. Off-season was particularly good, we'd stay for a week or two in a village, get to know the locals, they'd get to know us - then strange things would happen - like eating at a restaurant we'd work out the cost from the menu, hand over the money to the cashier, and they'd give half of it back - with explanation that the prices are "tourist prices" but you're locals now. You couldn't argue against it.

It's very sad if that's gone now.

That is EXACTLY the experience I would have treasured, so I am also exceptionally disappointed that won't be happening this trip. We enjoyed a similar experience in Nadi (Fiji) on our first trip (back when everything was crazy cheap and not as tourist geared).

Maybe things'll settle back down in Turkey again. But I certainly wouldn't be going there for a year or three at this point in time.

I see there is a lot of noise in Turkey about reinstating the death penalty. By the tone of it, it would appear that the proponents would like such a law to be made retrospective.
