I'm taking my team to the Gold Coast for a weekend, however our team is quite young and will probably survive a weekend together without any major issues, which may not apply to some IT departments...

Maybe you can organize some sort of multiplayer gaming tournament like on a console or PC. The winner would be awarded with some sort of gift.

This looks like fun http://www.magicbroomsticktours.co.nz/team-building/

I have been on for all of 5 seconds and would love to give one a proper go.

Actually sounds like a great day to me.  Even better if it started early with hunting the meal.  Although I'm not sure bourbon tasting after drinking beer in the sun all day is fantastic idea.

No women in your team, eh? This is the outfit that got in trouble for having extremely sexist signage on their premises.

Step 1: Determine the budget for Xmas do

Step 2: Determine the number of employees

Step 3: Divide budget by employees

Step 4: Give the money to the employees

I tend to disregard "outrage de jour" so I missed this.  But I note they have removed the offending sign-age, so surely they should no longer be punished for it.

Was a storm in a teacup quite a few months back.  Picked up by the clickbait media who did their level best to whip it into a frenzy.

I've been there for dinner several times and there are always plenty of women there enjoying a great meal.  I've never seen anything offensive there at all.

I read up on the sign-age in question.  It was quite funny, but maybe more appropriate on 7 days than in a restaurant bathroom.

Anyhow I'm definitely going there next time I'm in AKL.

You may have fun at a party and support local developers at the same time - play "Swordy" - up to 4 people together:

Back in the day, my boss told me to organise the Xmas party. I prepared a sensible option and the "don't ask, don't get" option- tuk-tuks to the nearest marina, water taxi to the helipad, helicopter to Waiheke (two helicopters, there were a few of us), taxis to Mud Brick for festivities and no curfew.

Guess what got approved? Clue: the ferry ride home was entertaining. 8D

I think this approach misses the point of such functions, much in the same way giving money on a birthday or Christmas instead of a present.  Yes, I know there are times when money may be the most appropriate option, but a gift or a good well organised function has a lot to be said for them.

I fondly remember the Christmas functions at the places the have had them and misseed them at places that didn't have them. For many work places it's one of the few times staff can gather in an environment where they can relax and interact with other staff they don't get to work closely with (and get to know the face behind the spouse's names) and generally enhance workplace harmony.

What you fondly remember, I would regard as hell.

The classical folly of extrovert managers is to assume that everybody wants to "have a good time" in the same way that they do, which generally involves for the normal extrovert, getting hammered, woe betide if you are a teetotal introvert by nature.

You seem to be making assumptions about how all work functions are. I don't fondly remember any of them for the attendees getting hammered as you describe it.

I know some people are introverts and don't enjoy the company of large groups of people, however the human race is by and large a species that is by nature a social animal and joining in together in groups is more the norm than not. Having a function to recognise the years efforts and celebrate an occasion like Christmas, I think has a lot of value.
