Blackbirds are one of nature's gifts.
You must be a miserable sod not to like them.

The SR71 is neat looking tho.
;)
There is one at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. I remember standing next to it a few years ago, amazed to be so close to something that just a few more years ago had been so secret that standing that close would have got me shot!
And at the air and space museum at Dulles, DC. Awesome. Stand next to an SR71, Shuttle, Saturn 5 boosters, wow
Saw one flying once, in Toronto in about 1982. I took photos with my Canonette - the plane is pretty small taken from the top of the CN Tower with a 35mm lens, but under a loupe you can certainly identify it as an SR71.
I hate starlings...22cal lead injection seems to work.
I don't mind Thrushes
I like Fantails
I would love it if we had ravens around.
Why?.... no idea really
Matthew
Our birds may all be gone soon anyway.

Yes, ravens are nice. There are crows in the North Island but the eco facists at DoC are busy trying to eradicate them.

They're presumably Australian ravens. Rather than eradicate them, we should just tax them - yet deny them all rights of residents.
What really annoys me is when Blackbirds sing in the dead of night. Maybe it's because they have wing problems but why don't they just get over it and learn to fly. All their lives they've been waiting for this moment to arise, so just get on with it FFS.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Spur Winged Plovers do that. They seem to delight in flying around in small groups in the middle of the night, squawking their hideous noise. If only I had a shotgun with a night vision sight...!!

Ah... a left-hand thread.

Wooooosh! Something just went right over Geektastic's head - it might have been a blackbird, but it could have been a beetle...

You'll rarely get close enough with shottie to hita plover - they are quite flighty. Even getting them with a rim fire 22 can be difficult. At about 80m they are off on foot like roads runner, and at about 50m they are on the wing
A small calibre centre-fire does the trick e.g. 22-250. For something a little more subtle maybe a .17 HMR?
They also ground nest in open pasture so eradication of juveniles is easy.
We observed them harassing native birds on our farm so treated them the same as magpies, possums etc - to be eradicated.
Disclaimer: I'm unsure of the current protection status of the plovers. They were self introduced to Dunedin around WW1 so they may be classed as native?

....
They are introduced, so in this country more man's folly than natures gift.
So were trout and salmon.
What is your point?
My point i introduced birds are not a gift from nature. They are something imposed by humans
As to your counter example .... trout have dramatically (some would say devastatingly) impacted native fish populations and freshwater habitats in this country.
Although legally protected (and an important recreational/tourism resource) they are as destructive in the freshwater environment as ferrets and stoats are on land.
