I kid you not.

He needn't have worried. She has plenty of other sources. The Internet, neighbours, relatives, the stranger in the dirty mac, other girls who know even less than she does, but do know that jumping up and down prevents pregnancy.

Strange that he was at a loss for words, though. He never is when it comes to telling other people how to live. Maybe he has just never seen a penis, including his own?

Definitely.

I recently took 115 kids to the local pool for our school swimming gala, and they all showered and changed in the general (gendered) changerooms. The only ‘risk’ we felt the need to minimise was that at least one parent was present in each changeroom to supervise the kids (mostly from doing silly things like wet papertowel wads and towel flicking TBH) and the several different adults who came through to change and go swimming themselves caused absolutely no ‘outrage’ among the 7-12 year olds of either gender.

I was personally pleased by the several complements I heard at the entrance about how well the children were behaved.

When my wife goes with only our two boys, she happily takes them (under 6) into the ladies changerooms if the 2 ‘family’ rooms are in use, and neither has ever made any comment about the other ladies in their, nor are the other ladies in any way upset by young toddlers of thee other gender being in their change area.

After around age 8 my older son felt ‘awkward’ and is now allowed to change in the male changerooms when they go swimming every week.

No harm done!

I personally think this is normal NZ cultural practice, and highly conservative people need to realise that it’s up to THEM to facilitate their conservative views.

JimmyH: It's not news. It's on Stuff - NZ's answer to the National Enquirer - and not for some time a bona fide news outlet.

Stuff has plenty of quality reporting. It also has pointless social media stories like this one. There is a difference. NZ is small these publications cover all bases.

National enquirer elvis abducted by aliens etc? It's nothing like that.

McCoskrie is probably lost for words now over how to make up the income shortfall after the Charities Commission (or whatever their successor within the DIA is now called) rightly determined that his idiotic group isn't a charity and, therefore, should not receive an income tax exemption.

It's not that far off IMO. Some of the stories they have been carrying on issues such (such as those planted by the anti-fluoride lobby) have got about as much scientific credibility as declaring that Elvis is alive and well on the moon.

Stuff doesn't have much quality reporting at all now. Fairfax used to have quite a bit, but not for the past couple of years. That's why I cancelled my subscription to the print issue, and rarely bother with the web page.

It's mostly just Outbrain clickbait (you won't BELIEVE what Meghan Markle feeds her pet poodle), pointless social media stories, endless opinion pieces (particularly that awful "Stuff Nation" section), and stale re-prints of old stories from overseas that I likely read the day before. And what they do carry is poorly written and laden with errors and mistakes.

There have been a couple of stories on issues I have been working on and know the full story. They don't do any digging or actual reporting. Mostly they just re-heat the press-release they have been handed without any investigation or thought at all. It's embarrassing how easy it was to get them to print what we wanted rather than an actual story, by just doing the work for them and handing them something reusable.

Unless there is a specific reason to go there, such as a story relevant to my current employer, the signal-to-noise ratio is too weak to justify even visiting the website for free.

The contrast with a quality news outlet (eg Washington Post, The Telegraph) is pretty unfavourable.

Exactly. We left NZ in 1983 and lived in Aussie till 2014. Since returning home my partner and I have become quite amazed and in some case quite shocked at the increased small and narrow mindedness of (some) people here and more importantly the sway they have with local and national authorities. In some areas we are world leaders in others we are quite backward. A lot of these people would not survive in a multi-cultural city like Sydney.

This all inclusiveness of Maori culture in a largely European/British culture when they only amount to 15% of the population plus their billions which should be used for housing, clothing & food of THEIR whanau but really isn't.

Some state schools not in-bracing Christmas or Easter cause it may offend other religions.

Cutting down trees in play grounds & removing playground equipment because a child may get hurt.

Banning children books because it (supposedly) has gay under/over tones - Noddy & Big Ears.

Banning black faced dolls.

Etc

My first OE was with the RNZAF to Butterworth Airbase, Malaysia. WOW what an eye opener, culture, sights and smells. We all embraced it with open arms. Next was my OE to Europe and when in Austria, which was still covered in the grips of winter snow, we went to a large family swimming complex with indoor & outdoor pools. Tried to find the men's changing room but soon worked out that the changing rooms were unisex. Waltzed on in and my first sight was a very aged lady straight out of the National Geographic, stark naked with everything sagging to the ground. None of us batted an eye. All ages and all sexes were present. Went to an apartment store and everybody was trying on clothing in the aisles. In the Grand Bizarre in Istanbul ladies were trying on Bra's in public.

Come on - this is the 21st century in a supposedly well educated country. Tolerance, common sense, understanding and friendship please.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I checked several of the top ranking stuff fluoride articles just now and the vast majority had good balance.

From my point of view they do quite a bit. Actually an enormous amount for a free service.

The outbrain stuff is there for people who want to click it, the social media sourced stuff has an audience also, the opinion section has a place in the same way. The stale reprints yeah ok you use other news services for international news. Not everybody does.

Fair comment. Many news services have exactly this problem. There is a competitive aspect to it.

Those services have massive resources compared to say NZHerald and Stuff who are serving a market of four million or so. Imo they do an excellent job within the constraints at hand. Could they do even better, yes I believe so.

Yesterday's news used to be fish and chip paper. Now it can be viewed for years. It's amazing. Some of the perceptions about accuracy arise from that very factor. News is now created in a shorter time than ever before, and it is available for longer and to more people than ever before.

I am aware that nudity can be offensive in some cultures and religions.

But that's what family changing rooms are for.

A family could even use two family change rooms if they needed to separate sexes for the changing process.
