I don't think that you're example is very good at showing that people are asking for more than retail. You're quoting the lowest price on Pricespy and not the prices at which most people would buy them. The current price range for a new Xbox One X being $689 to $822.25 plus shipping where that applies.

So if most people pay above the lowest Pricespy price then your point is invalidated and you're just having a moan. You could then be thankful that you can buy a new one with a 15% discount if you spent $700 instead of $822.

Thinking about it, its not even TradeMe users overcharging for items, even hitting the local markets on weekends has shown a huge leap in pricing on 2nd hand goods let alone new. And a lot are selling new goods compared to old now as well. I use to be able to pick up some great deals on a weekend, but not anymore - 90% of the sellers are "full time" dealers and have watched prices people are asking for things on TM and price theirs to match.

Not always, some of them got it even lower at xmas sales.

It does make me wonder why so many near new xbox one x's get sold.

Im watching and xbox one s right now, had 3 hours to go and is already $310, no games.

As for pricespy, i generally just use PBs prices. But either way thats not the buyers problem they overpaid for something if they did. When you tell them they politely they get insulted, people generally feel a bit emotional when they realise they paid too much for something.

Although I found this phenomena to not apply to all items. Perhaps its young people not realising you cant sell a used item for more than its new price :-)

cost plus margin +TM fee and ended up like this. i guess

People can list for whatever price they like - I agree that often they are cheaper brand new through a shop or other online vendor. You would have to be crazy to pay some of the prices (especially for new items).

Collectors/Niche items will sell for whatever someone is prepared to pay for them.

If you are able to find your way to trademe.co.nz you are able to find your way to priceme or pricespy and do some cross checks. Likewise the rest of the internet is there, just ready for queries.

clearly, thats what we are talking about.

you can sell your orange for $1m if you want, is anyone going to buy it? The discussion is around the psychology of why TM sales are often so close to full price. If you compare it to Ebay I never had that issue.

I think the problem occurs due to final selling fee, which is 7% in Trademe.

In Ebay its 9% or a maximum of $50.

Clearly higher valued items you are better off with Ebay. Also insertion fees on trademe are off the HOOK !

Along with the product you are using, the search engine is terrible, the UX design is terrible, the application in general needs UX design, which they advertised for, so why hasnt it improved. When I search for boats up to 5m and $15k, I dont want to see a 7m $30k boat in the results.

What I most enjoy are beginners who get into bidding wars and end up paying substantially more for a used item than a new one would cost. I have seen it many times. What I most do not enjoy are beginners making ridiculous bids and spoiling it for everyone else.

Why do you enjoy seeing people be so naïve and showing a lack of experience wisdom and judgement? Is it purely because they are willing to pay more than you have judged to be the correct price?

I can understand its frustrating, you just bought a $700 xbox and realised you either over spent or its not really for you.

Subsequently you are going to lose $50 just selling it. But thats not the majority, most of them are either 6 months old or out of warranty (in the case of x1s). Yet they want $320 which is the cost even at a lot of stores. And you cant really blame the buyer because people dont do their homework when buying a product and buy it from a department store well over cost price.

I think 5% is a fairer price and maximum of $50 to sell something. This would encourage people to list their products at a more reasonable price and have them relist it 8 times before it sells.

I dont see it changing in a hurry.

I bought an Apple Imac for $600, sold it 3 months later when i was off overseas for $900. I just listed it to start at $600 hoping it might cover my costs.

Same with last notebook.

You do get bargains sometimes like a guy just sold a huaweai mate 10 for $700, even on pricespy they are $900ish and it was 2 weeks old, he got a new phone given to him.So hes essentially selling it for $650.

Actually they are more like $1k cheapest here. Damn I wish i had seen it sooner. bargain. See that kind of phone normally would be asking $1100 because Noel Leeming sold it for $1200 etc (not literally just using NL as a department store), and usually the seller has no idea they are sold for $980 at PBtech etc.

No doubt it ended up at the Ellerslie Car Fair for $2000 where it was being sold as his daughter's as she had upgraded.
