Not sure if he is an instrumentalist in any way, but composing music and lyrics is, to me, a BIG step ahead of 'spinning disks' even if they are put together in some sort of semblance to satisfy the listener .... commercial radio (pop and classical) has been doing just that for decades

He makes original music with a huge array instruments, synthesizers, tone generators etc. Oh and has a whole bunch of Grammy's and other awards. He's done movie scores blah blah. Latest project has been a full orchestral remakes of his biggest tracks.

To go with these tracks he also develops software (with friends of course) for running his live shows to automate the lighting, effects etc.

Oldies can keep their heads up their asses about what a "DJ" is. But the fact is these days they are just as talented, if not more, as a 'normal' artist who plays boring instruments like guitars and pianos.

Edit: There is this cool things these days. The young'ins call it "Google". They tell me, if you don't know the answer to something, you can put a word in a box and it gives you all the information the world has on that subject so you can educate yourself on topics you don't understand.

DJ's such as DeadMau, Avincii etc are musicians not disc jockeys, they use techniques, effects and original material to make unique or at least individualized music,tbh a good DJ can make old music relevant again :P

Youtube/Social media has not claim to the success of these guys or people in general, social media without desirable content attracts no interest, content is king, give the people what they want and booom instant internet fame

Good old time musicians can make some electronic music relevant again too, even 35 year old stuff:

I also kind of like this for the irony that the original Joy Division used analogue techniques (spray cans etc) to make industrial electronic sounding music.

As others have said bog standard DJ's (ie, club/EDM/hip-hop) combine multiple tracks smoothly to create different mixes and hopefully a smooth set

They also read the crowd and take them on a journey over the duration of their set - esp good ones - changing the mood / genre / age of the music and tempo etc - and this certainly takes skill to do it right

So a great DJ can really make for a great evening

However many are sh%te ie. not particularly talented and do little more than beat mix one "bangin tune" after another - esp the mega DJ's - so well done to them I guess? :)

Agreed Driller Mega DJ's sets can be the amazing just look at some of the biggest music festivals these days and they are mostly all DJ sets with other artists to back them up

It's not just the mainstream DJ's/ Producers that have made the scene what is it today, a lot of this started when clubs got popular. I look at this scene like you would the 1950's and the "Dances" everyone went to.. this is just the new side of the old ways.

LOL I don't do heavy metal, and I hate Meatloaf with a vengeance! For those that were into those, yes they were cult like. I prefer Tom Petty, Psychelic Furs, Mental As Anything to name a few....
