Absence of detail in a news article is not proof of anything.

But the attitudes being displayed in this this are proof of something

There are lots of unknowns in this case and I personally feel the crowdfunding response is the best one under the circumstances.

There have been a number of people post details online about why their insurance was invalid, and with no way of confirming this (and silence from them) they can only be regarded as speculation but are possibly true.

The government helping them with $ would set a precedent that they shouldn't have to go down. They are being provided with consular assistance which is the only requirement of the government.

It raises the important issue once again of ensuring you have travel insurance when heading overseas and more importantly that you fully understand what it does and doesn't cover and that you are compliant with the terms and conditions of the policy. I'd go as far as saying 99% of people have no idea what their travel insurance actually covers.

Thing is, I have had run ins with these so called pre-existing conditions before. You go see a doctor for a tickle inn your nose 2 years ago, they get hold of that record, and suddenly you have a pre-existing condition that never affects you. while I was in Australia, insurer asked for medical records. I thought here we go again.

But this time, they used an INDEPENDENT medical opinion. The independent opinion stated i had no symptoms for more than 6 months so i did not have any pre-existing conditions. Insurance then approved treatment. Bam!

No from me, Tired of paying for other peoples misfortune but at the same time covering myself in case I have an unfortunate event.
Maybe if we drew some lines to America and spectated how they handle medical things then people will buck up their ideas.

Yeah let's quickly mirror the worst health system in the western world and not care about anybody who gets sick, what a great solution. Or we could try being decent human beings.

It is more indicating that yes we do have an amazing system but there are still times where the person needs to take ownership themselves. That is my point.

Not too sure how you interpreted what I said as "lets just copy them", but thats pretty standard around here people trying to load questions to start arguments.

I'm all for helping them if in return there is law that requires all travellers overseas (leaving or arriving in New Zealand) must take out comprehensive travel insurance in much the same way that in Australia that there is compulsory third party vehicle insurance.

Unfortunately CTP or Greenslip in NSW is not what you think it is. If you say rear end a  car, CTP does not cover this, you have to pay or claim your insurance.

If you hit a power pole, wipe out Mrs Jones's fence and you and your passenger are hospitalised, the Power pole and your passenger's hospital visit is covered by CTP, the balance is by your or your insurance.

This may be different in other states, but this was the case when I was there 2000 - 2003

John

Forgot to say in this case I am in two minds, I can understand why the govt is not helping but it would open the floodgates.

As others have said here, there is more to this than we have had reported in the media.

I would not be opposed to the Air force doing a Training exercise to bring her home.

I know enough to be dangerous

Well the family in question did take out insurance didn't they? How can this be compared to third party vehicle insurance that doesn't cover one's own bills!

Actually this woman and her family are being helped financially, by a give a little fund raiser. They're just not being given money via the NZ government. I have no problem at all if individuals want to contribute to her coming home.

This case has seemed a little strange to me from the start, like there is a major piece of information we haven't got.

I think that the family has no gripe with the Insurance company - they haven't named it, and they haven't slammed it. There appears to be no 'outrage baiting' from them or the media about the insurance company's refusal to pay.

I wouldn't have minded if the Government had offered to help get her back to a NZ hospital as a loan (similar to what they do if you are refused entry to a country and have to be repatriated and you have no means of doing so - you have to pay it back - I believe anyway).

Looks like the Givealittle has raised a fair chunk of change. I hope for her and her family they get home safe and she comes right.

Give a little was the appropriate response I think. but I shadow your sentiment that a loan may well have been another option from the Government, though the time it would take to put something like this in place wouldn't be ideal. They tried to remortgage their house and couldn't raise enough, presumably because they wouldn't be able to service the additional debt.

The question that was raised above, was a reasonable one.. Is there evidence to support that coming back to NZ would result in superior medical treatment to that she is already receiving. From what relatively vague press coverage there has been, it seems her illness is anti biotic resistant.

I have preexisting conditions.  I can't get insurance and it would seem in cases like this I can't get govt help either.  I'm also in pain a lot and that can make me not a very nice person so I can't see me getting a good Give A Little campaign going either :)

I can use the public health system but that's....challenging.  Most of my treatment comes out of my own pocket.  I'm lucky to be earning with my conditions, people who can't work are stuffed.  I don't know the ins and outs of this specific case enough to comment other than my general view being that every citizen should get at least the one govt mercy in exceptional circumstances.  I would rather my tax $ went towards helping NZers in need than funding govt limousines.

On a different note, anyone who has ever been sick are not allowed to travel in case something happens again?

Of course they are allowed to travel.  They just need have a plan and not rely on someone else doing it for them.  Lots of people have problems, and plan accordingly.
