I feel for her, but no. It would open the floodgates for everyone to ask the govt to get them back home.

NO. If they get government help, I'll cancel all my insurance.

Too often the government bails out people without insurance. It's becoming expected nowadays that if things go pear shaped someone else will pay your bills.

Sorry it’s a no from me. They purchased insurance and they would have been well aware that the pre existing condition was not covered yet they still took the risk and went anyway. I am sure this happens more than we know, just that others don’t go running to the media expecting handouts. If private citizens want to donate then great, but should not be up to the government

They did have insurance, the company declined the claim.

It's a tragic situation, but I have to agree that no, the government shouldn't pay for this. They could maybe assist in other ways with support, but to organise and pay for her return to New Zealand would set a precedent.

Yes - for sure. There should be all support AND - of course - a pay-back plan/contract with the supporting government/state.

How can this be a pre-existing condition? The bowel wasn't twisted when she left NZ.

On a different note, anyone who has ever been sick are not allowed to travel in case something happens again?

I understand that they had declared a pre-existing health condition that was not covered, so why should the tax payer help, especially if they had tried to buy an online travel insurance to save a few dollars?

Are you saying that people with a disclosed existing health problem that may cost additional $000,000's to be repatriated should be covered, even though they may be at greater risk?

Was this travel insurance organized on line? Being the cheapest?

Maybe the insurance industry needs to move back away from cheap is best online, and the additional cost of using a broker to explain things in person could possibly make more sense?

I think the family should name the pre existing condition and name the insurer. Something is not right here ... I wouldn't be too quick to pass judgement without knowing all the facts.

People always blame the insurer. If this goes through the correct procedures, which I am sure it will now, all will be revealed.

I don't think the family ever blamed the insurer on record.

No.. Every time the government bails out the uninsured (i'm looking at you Christchurch red zone owners!) the rest of us lose doubly, having paid for our insurance and then paying for them not having it.

DaveB: Should people like this be helped?

Yes, and they have been assisted by NZ diplomatic staff. Givealittle has raised the required funds. Hard to know what the insurance story is without full information.

The government didn’t bail them out because they were uninsured, they were paid compensation because the government illegally kicked them out and seized their property without following due process. The media reporting has been disingenuous at best. Anyhow back on topic...
