I wonder if they have fixed the problem whereby the self checkouts will not read your club card if you bring it up on the screen of your phone. I haven't tried it for a few months so I might give it another go today.

Pretty sure they've fixed this - I used to have trouble but the last few times I've been to New World it's been fine.

Yeah, I tried it this afternoon and it appeared to work after a couple of attempts.

The vital difference here is that Foodstuffs North Island are almost in a world of their own vs Foodstuffs South Island.

In the South Island, scanning the club card, you immediately hear a high pitched chirp and a mini graphic of the club card and flybuys logo dash across the screen to sit on the screen so you know its been scanned.

Just pointing out the difference...

Now as for Countdown.. we still have to use a mag stripe card...so whats that about?

Machines have always had the format read capability (I searched what the reader can do many moons ago when they went in) But it was only enabled around the same time as the motherships sticky club key tags went out... Which also coincided with the New World app being released.

Don't need it though. Its super bloaty and large, needing all sorts of permissions. When you can just as easy add it to google wallet or stocard

weird one as I find New Worlds and Pak'n'Save self checkout to be quicker/faster then Countdowns'

However, recent (not so really, maybe in the past 12 months) upgrade (countdown Ponsonby at least) is pretty much on par with New World victoria park.

Both in AKL :)

I echo that for NZ in New World Wigram, Chch, seems fine

Same here. The Countdown self service terminals are a nightmare - their weight sensitivity is a nightmare and the fact their business model is now to not actually have any more than 1-2 checkouts open and rely on self service results in people talking large orders through them.

Foodstuffs were three different groups that are now just North Island and South Island. Wellington had the best POS platform (Storeline - which Countdown use as well) which I think Auckland was planning to move to. The self service checkouts for all stores (and Countdown) are all the same NCR terminals but do have customisation.

The only strange thing about the Foodstuffs self service  checkouts in the Lower NI is something somebody has already pointed out above - after your EFTPOS transaction shows as successful on the pinpad screen it can often take 10-15s (sometimes a lot longer even) to spit out the receipt and say anything on screen.

Not to get too far off topic, but you can make and scan a barcode for your Onecard :) (Countdown scanners had a lot of trouble reading my phone so printed it)

I keep it on my keys in one of those clear key tags, along with my club card on the other side.

As for phone screens not working - these will not work on most older flat deck scanners due to the technology used.

Old scanners use lasers which are simply incapable of reading a phone screen due to the immediate refraction when it hits the phone screen. I've seen lots of NW stores with older scanners that now have portable handheld scanners at checkout so people can scan their NW clubcard or phone screen.

I find I have to press the "I brought my own bag" button twice until it kicks into life. The repetitive dialogue is also very annoying.

In regard to automation taking jobs away I dont have a problem with this, its a good reason for people to upskill themselves.

It appears the NCRs rear reader is the multi format 2D/mobile and can do image scan, when the scale decks are still laser. If I recall Most the animations at PnS and New world (when present) indicate to feed it to the rear reader

That was my test at NW to keep checking for it being enabled. One day.. bam. It worked. If my phones in my hand, rear, if my wallet/card being used.. zap bottom

NZ had ApplePay/AndroidPay way before Aussie and in fact the big 4 Aussie banks refused to have anything to do with that system. Even ANZ Kiwi had it way before the Aussie parent company.

No it didn't. ANZ NZ launched it several months after ANZ Australia.

It is only late 2018 and into this year that the Aussie banks have grudgingly accepted ApplePay/AndroidPay contactless systems.

Also not true. Australian and NZ banks (being the same banks anyway) have accepted Android Pay quite readily - the sticking point has always been Apple Pay as Apple charges a percentage fee per transaction to have Apple Pay support, which is absolutely ludicrious. Google/Samsung/Garmin charge no such fee, hence why banks have rolled them out happily.

I also believe NZ had 'SelfCheckOuts" before Aussie did, at least in quantity.

Also not true. Australian supermarkets started a drive to implement self-checkouts in every store back in 2008, vs NZ a few years later.

As for charging fees, any fee, for contact and contactless payments, that is also outrageous as you have already made countless human jobs redundant as demonstrated by the many closures of bricks & mortar banks and the upkeep of those bricks. But I suppose when you charge dead people banking fees what more can you expect ??

Ok, now it's clear you're just going on an anti-Australian rant. Commonwealth Bank (or its subsidiary ASB) are hardly a shining example of ethics, but that has nothing to do with the economics of credit/debit merchant fees, something which for the most part the banks largely don't even control (they are fixed by Visa International and MasterCard International respectively).

Australian banks (with the whip cracking of the RBA) have also launched some initiatives that NZ really needs to get on with - such as the New Payments Platform which enables instantaneous transfer of money even between banks 24/7 including public holidays, and doesn't even require an account number - instead using a portable ID such as mobile number that could refer to whatever bank the ID owner wants it to. Just as an example.

You are quite correct but from my own personal perspective with my frequent coming and going between the two countries in the 80's, 90's & 2000's, it certainly appeared that NZ had the quicker and larger uptake of this technology than Australia.

I'll fact check better next time.

Self Checkouts arrived in NZ in Sept 2007 with their introduction by Foodstuffs NZ. They were not introduced into Aussie until mid 2008 this time by Woolworths Victoria.

I am not going on an Anti-Australian rant, I merely stated that fees, such as the interchange fee which is one of the many fees charged, in NZ are outrageous compared to Australia. The reason being is because these fees are not regulated (capped) here like they are in Aussie.

Agreed

One thing to note here is that NZ has always had better penetration of electronic payments in general because EFTPOS (Paymark) charged no per transaction fee. eftpos Australia (EPAL) charges a small fee per transaction, but most merchant providers charge blended rate that charges for eftpos the same as credit or debit. As a result, credit card acceptance in Australia as a percentage of merchants taking electronic payments is 100% vs New Zealand's much smaller percentage of a much larger percentage.

You did say "in quantity" which is the part I responded to. My local Pak 'n Saves sure didn't have self checkout (and still didn't, last I went near them).

Actually, the interchange fee wasn't all that outrageous. I see all these averages bandied about, but they ignore that Australian premium cards had very high interchange rates (which is why the RBA had to step in again to re-regulate because banks were issuing more platinum cards to dodge the caps) - and that they're comparing against Australia's rates after the second round of cuts. I can see the Commerce Commission considering following the RBA's example to be honest, though I do think there is to an extent over-regulation in the space in Australia.

What I've noticed is that at Countdown I can tap my phone and Android Pay works every time. At New World checkouts (both attended or self-checkout) the first tap always fails and I have to try a second time - Khandallah, Churton Park and Lambton Quay, all the same result.

Countdown use Verifone EFTPOS terminals, which I have always found faster and better for contactless than the ones New World and PnS use - ingenico? (not just at Supermarkets either, I've found Verifone terminals better at all the retailers I've used them at).
