You have to admit, although the response from high up was always to coverup, the ability to wrangle up the amount of manpower used to fix the problem would have been difficult for a government without as much power...

Yeah watched 3 episodes, wondering how much is factual ? Good change to other types of series anyhow.

It's pretty close! The main aspects are all correct (based on official reports and witness accounts). The bits that are dramatized are the Scientists impact, in actual fact it was hundreds of scientists  working together to make the government aware of the danger and coming up with a plan.

Is there anywhere someone without Sky/HBO could watch this at the moment?

I see it is on Neon

Same. Had our regular Family BBQ, this doco came up, its on Neon, as Neon has HBO. I don't have Neon, but I'm not averse to subscribing, if it has one to two things I'd like. I've seen posts here saying its rubbish or saying its good.

Sky/HBO? Its on Sky? I've been out, sorry if it's obvious.

I subbed Neon after doing a quick Google for "neon apple tv", and uhhh.. turns out the result I saw was an iOS app. Never once used that month sub. :( Should have known there was something shoddy when they didn't offer a trial period.

Simply brilliant!!

Thanks to wonderstuff for letting me know about the podcasts.

wonderstuff:

Well worth listening to "The Chernobyl Podcast" which discusses each episode with the writer.    Good insight into what was real and what was compressed / dramatised / aggregated for transition to TV.

I will listen to the episode 5 edition and then I might just binge-watch the whole series again.

Watching shows like this does make me stop and smell the roses of being able to live in a free world without any real oppression and how good I've got it (despite my contributions to the rants and ramblings about things that annoy us and the general state of the world today).

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Finished watching it last nught - gritty, horrifying and riveting.

This got me reading further about the accident online. The wider story is really interesting too IMO - stuff that I had never really joined together before.

Mikhail Gorbachev had started talking quietly about glasnost and perestroika only just before Chernobyl because the Soviet Union was already failing and falling apart. The futile and failed attempts by Soviet bureaucrats below him to cover up the accident, and Russian public revulsion at those attempts once it became known, hastened the process of glasnost and perestroika. Chernobyl became a catalyst for the collapse of the Soviet Union which happened only six years later.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

This show has convinced me, a Chernobyl tour is now going to be part of our Europe holiday next year.

A lot of small radioactive pieces were flung out of the reactor after the explosion. Does anyone know if any attempt has been made to collect any of it?

Ah, yes. The entire area was gone over to recover all the pieces, and 10-20cm of topsoil from a very wide area around it was removed and buried.

Watched the final of this the other night, wow!  The whole series was low level chilling horror throughout, amazing docuseries.
