Clearly Jesse Mulligan knew this when he went on a rant yesterday

Given the years of bagging Sky as streaming is the way to go, and the thousands of posts that NZ FTA is rubbish, surely shutting down Mediaworks, and ideally TVNZ is the way forward? Thats not my idea but that suggestion fits with past commentary

He'll just be stuck with trumpeting his woke virtue signalling on RNZ then.

Does he do that?  I don't see him on TV because I don't watch it.  I like his interviewing style on radio, he clearly does some reading on the subject matter, so asks the right questions, does it in a probing but non-confrontational manner, and as such tends to get the answer - instead of turning the interview into an opportunity for an interviewer to show how frightfully opinionated and supremely clever they are.

I should add using the term "woke virtue signalling" as an ad-hom condemnation of anybody who says something "liberal" that you don't agree with - to the something that annoys me thread.

There is a good piece on the spinoff this morning , laying out how this is part of potentially larger changes in the NZ TV/Media Landscape that are being decided by the Minister of Broadcasting at the moment.

I really can't imagine who is going to buy an asset with below zero NPV. Even if one of the other big media companies were in a position to buy it then the Commerce Commission would probably block it like they did with Fairfax/NZME.

I predict that some of the brands and personalities will be picked up by other media outlets, and the rest will be wound up.

Given your clear dislike of the man (noting it's your second post essentially making the same point!), the answer is simple: avoid listening to Nat Rad between 1 and 4, or whatever his current hours are.

At least he's fairly easy to avoid if you so desire (which, personally, I don't); unlike Mike Hosking, whose words, voice and face are seemingly ubiquitous across NZ media - the joys of being a 'shock jock' means it is apparently necessary for all media - even those not owned by NZME - to report his latest blowarsery...

I think it's sad that Three is up for sale. No doubt some people will lose their jobs and if Oaktree can't find a buyer then they'll all lose their jobs. That's not good. it's also not good for the TV landscape. It demonstrates the tough market that Three operates in, especially when their owner is not interested in injecting any capital into the business. It may reduce competition for TVNZ but only in the FTA market. And what's bad for Three is also bad for TVNZ

Jesse Mulligan however, is talking a fair bit of crap.

I take issue with a few of his statements. He claims "Unlike Three if their [TVNZ] budget doesn't add up, they get to say to their owner - the government - "sorry, we're going to lose $17million this year" and the government says "whatevs".

I can't tell if he is just being cheeky or if he genuinely believes this. The government factors all of its revenue sources into its own budget. Would they really say "$17 million, no biggie?" I highly doubt it.

"Our government has allowed a competitor to turn into a not-for-profit"

Even taking his use of "not-for-profit" as a figure of speech, it's still very inaccurate and misleading. TVNZ is still expected to make a proft. It still operates commercially. If the govt - that is, the sole shareholder - wanted to, it could still demand a dividend. It has agreed not to so that TVNZ can reinvest any profit it makes into the company. The reason for that is to improve the companies ability to operate in the market. Oaktree also could agree not to take a dividend (though I don't know if they have been taking one) or they could agree to invest money into the company to improve its ability to operate in the market... if that was something Oaktree was interested in. What Oaktree chooses to do is not the fault of TVNZ or the govt.

Mulligan also claims that TVNZ has an "unlimited pot of money to dip into" which is absolute unmitigated crap. TVNZ is government owned - it is not government funded. It a commercially run company, it has access to the same contestable funding as Three and it chases the same advertisers and the same viewers as Three. I'm not sure why Mulligan thinks it is not a level playing field. The only difference is that TVNZ's owner is committed to the long term future of the company and Three's owner is interested only in the short term profitability of the company.

If Three had disappeared a few years ago, I would have been greatly upset at the loss of its excellent current events programming. Now I honestly wouldn't miss it at all. I can't remember when I last looked at it. If RNZ becomes something like TV7 used to be, I might give it a try for specific NZ content, but there is now so much to choose from that I no longer care much. I would still be interested in some serious NZ current events programming, but since there isn't any I am content to look elsewhere for non-NZ content.

He seems quite happy to cash a pay-cheque from RNZ despite it also arguably undermining commercial broadcasters. Say, doesn't Mediaworks also run radiostations?

****Caution****; rant follows

For all those lauding the imminent demise of free to air television and Sky TV remember for many in NZ there is no option and for many Sky is not an option. For many the $18+ for Netflix and $80+ for UFB amounts to a huge percentage of their monthly food allowance. The 'I told you so' in our community forget that for many free to air is all they can have. Oh and before it comes up, contrary to popular belief and what one hears from the likes of Hosking and the bigots on social media all those on income support are not spending their alms on Sky, KFC and Tui.

Not just the income deprived, but also people with limited technological skills. I just bought a Vodafone TV and navigating through the glitchy software is something that a lot of people would not be able to manage.

@Rikkitic: I understand where you're coming from, but I also don't think it's quite as dire as you make out - it's much like the wider NZ media landscape: yep, there's a lot of crud out there, but there are also a number of firms doing good work (Newsroom, Spinoff etc). Good content is out there, but it's much more dispersed and therefore harder to find

In relation to 'NZ current events', I'd highlight two videos  that weren't produced by the standard FTA networks we have traditionally expected to produce such content (I think both of these may have been supported by NZ on Air, which is reflecting this change of how and where we source our content). They're on topical issues and well-worth watching:

  • Infinite Evil - a nearly hour-long documentary from Stuff on the 'incubators of hate' as they put it (8-chan in particular)

(Also an interesting one there on abortion

"Our government has allowed a competitor to turn into a not-for-profit"

Ok lets take a look at Mediaworks,

2016: loss of $14.8 million

2017 loss of $5.7 million

2018 loss of $5.5 million

Now granted theses are group figures that mix in everything, but given that Oaktree are holding on to the radio and billboard businesses I'm guessing they actually make money, so the TV losses are probably even more than the headline figure.....

So much for TVNZ being a "not for profit"

Good luck with finding a buyer unless they put it out there as a fire sale.
