Geektastic: I don't but I do believe that there is no actual legal mandate not to mention suicide in Britain (or any other country of which I am aware - which obviously is not all of them) whereas there sort of is here.,

There is no legal requirement in NZ not to mention.

It would seem there is.

Section 71 of the Coroners Act 2006

Unless you have an exemption, you can’t make public:

  • the method or suspected method of the death
  • any detail (like the place of death) that might suggest the method or suspected method of the death
  • a description of the death as a suicide before the coroner has released their findings and stated the death was a suicide (although the death can be described as a suspected suicide before then).

From: https://www.health.govt.nz/your-health/conditions-and-treatments/mental-health/talking-about-suicide

A major concern with suicide is copycat behaviour. When a family member recently died the priest told me his next job was a suicide - the 3rd member of a family to hang themselves in the same garage.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

That is a long long way from some mythical legal requirement not to mention it at all as some posters were suggesting.

Geektastic: Hiding it behind confusing euphemisms is not addressing the issue or raising awareness of it as a problem.

In practice it's fairly obvious what's going on in the articles linked. The links to the various helplines are in fact raising awareness of it as a problem.

Why do people want to know why someone died other than morbid curiosity anyway?

Any unexpected death is a tragedy for the family and loved ones and close family will know what happened.

Why does the wider public need to know the details other that puritanical inferences that there was something wrong with that person and to given them 30s of gossip around the water cooler .

I am not a mental health expert but I think the issue is trying to determine why people kill themselves, and how this can be reduced. For a time, policy here, whether official or not, seemed to be to keep silent and hope the problem wouldn't get worse. But it didn't get better, either,  so now there is cautious movement in the direction of being more open about it, in the hope that discussing it might help vulnerable people feel a little less alone. The first approach clearly didn't work as we have consistently had one of the highest suicide rates in the world across all categories. So now the approach that much of the rest of the world uses is being tried. I don't think it is fair to describe public interest in the matter as  prurient voyeurism. Most people regard any suicide as a tragedy and want to know more about it in case it might affect someone close to them.
