neb: Consumer NZ just got the same results on one they tested. They actually got the exact same score so I checked that it wasn't the same review, but it's by a different person and contains different text, so it looks like two independent assessments produced the same result. It looks like it really is that bad.

We would have given it a negative score if possible.

hahahahah

It will be two different write ups of the same test results. Consumer and the Australian Choice magazine share testing.

Ah, thanks. So it could still just be a case of them getting a dodgy unit rather than independent replication of the results. However there is some level of independent confirmation from the Australian ProductReviews web site, which rates it very poorly (with the caveat that people generally go there to complain so the reviews are tilted towards the negative). In particular most of the 4-5 star reviews rate it on looks while the mass of 1-star reviews rate it on performance. And then there are 5-star reviews like this one:

I had many ongoing problems with my Smeg retro fridge. I loved it but couldn't live with the constant flooding, defrosting, food spoilage, broken plastic pieces and seal. Smeg completely fixed this with absolutely excellent customer service. I couldn't be happier and really thank them for this.

"Apart from the fact that it explodes randomly killing everyone in a 5m radius it's a great little product and I recommend it wholeheartedly".

Smeg is not cheap, too expansive.
