Thanks everyone for the suggestions in the this thread, it has inspired me to try somewhere other than my usual local supplier, Sublime (whom I can also recommend).

Rush seems to have a few honorable mentions, so I put in an order for 500g beans of the Organic Rush, so will see how that goes.

It has been a few years since it was asked.

Curious as to everyone's coffee drinking habits these days as it applies to subscription(fresh beans)?

I was ordering from Lafffare until a couple of years ago when I got lazy and switched to the same coffee but from the supermarket.

Now its a new machine and I need to appear to be a coffee snob again and go for the max. crema!!!!

Tried subscriptions, order/deliveries from Havana, ripe and good fortune. Found the inconsistent sometimes giving you stale beans. As a suscribed user I think you should be prioritised.

Now get from supermarket. Sometimes going to our locals (ripe/good fortune). The Havana from the supermarket are well sealed and at our locals, turn over enough to be fresh enough.

I get mine from a local roaster, which I'd highly recommend specifically and as your first choice. Freshest roast is best and nothing is fresher than beans roasted same day. Supermarket beans can be inconsistent and sometimes a month after roasting.

If you don't have a local option, I can highly recommend Rush Coffee as mentioned previously in this thread. I have ordered from them a number of times and their coffee is great and always within in days of being roasted.

While I tend to use one of the local roasters most of the time (and certainly always do for decaf), and I know this isn't a 'delivery service', I've picked up Havana beans a few times recently from Reduced to Clear. Something like $10 for the large pack (400g?).

Before I'm drowned out by snorts of derision, I hasten to add I do check the BB dates before buying. While most of the beans are clearly a few months old, the weird thing is I've found some bags where they're only a couple of weeks old. (Havana, like most roasters, doesn't print a roasted on date, but has confirmed via email they assume a five-month shelf life - somewhat better than the 1 year of Karajoz! Knowing this info is, I think, essential before buying beans from supermarkets or similar.)

Speaking of Reduced to Clear - this can often be a great source of stupidly cheap barista oat milk (though not for the last few months). I've just finished the last of my tetrapaks from there, and they had a BB of April 2024 and were still texturing fine. Much prefer to pay $1 a litre rather than the $4 of a standard discount on Boring or similar!

My preferred source of beans is my home set up. Behmor roaster and green beans from coffee workshop (Christchurch). I roast 400gr of beans each week (works out about 320 roasted weight), put these to rest for a week and consume at 7-14 days post roast. The Behmor is a small appliance (think counter top size) and stupidly easy to use. The pluses to home roasting include playing around with different types of bean and combinations as well as the $$ savings as green beans can be pretty cheap to buy and stored properly can last in the green state for ages.

For work, I order from C4, their Krank and Villan blends are very tasty.

Agree on this, but have never gotten around to subscribing. Although, a good excuse to drop in for a coffee each time I buy some.

I’ve found my twin! Behmor 1600 plus owner here and I just took delivery of 10kg of green beans of various origins from the coffee workshop. I generally like to roast 2-3 batches every 2nd or 3rd weekend as I like to experiment with blends. Still consume between 7-28 days of roasting. I have about 350 batches in my logbook now since picking up the Behmor about 7 years ago.

I'm a bit lazier, I blend pre-roast. I know thats not 100% optimal, but it still works well enough for me. Generally do a manual roast, 1-2 mins on 50%, 2-4 mins on 75%, about 13-15 mins on 100% and drop back to 50% on first crack. Gives the beans a decent enough drying time in the early stages of the roast. Brazillian is my fav bean, very sweet tasting coffee, but I've also got Yirg, Peru and Indonesian at the moment. 20kg a time for me.

another thumbs up for rush coffee. the organic blend is my favorite of theirs.

my main one is toasted but also the terrian is nice, tho somewhat different (if i remember right, its been a while.)

tho i just like to order different things from around nz and see how it tastes.
