Behaviour could be innocent but look shady.  Looks at the house repeatedly, looks around.  Slowly puts the envelope in then quickly withdraws it and holds it down by his side.  Walks back to vehicle and hightails it out of there.  I'm viewing this subjectively, but it looks to me like a guy checking he isn't being observed and then attempting a slight of hand.

I think that is getting a little carried away. Why step out of his travelling Porta Loo where he could sort through mail looking entirely normal?

Following some comments I have removed the video. Reading the first two pages gives a good description of the events without revealing anyone's face.

@Handsomedan I hope you get a response from NZPost soon although with the contractor model it will probably involve many channels (read time) to get to the answer. I've used Streetview to see what the Postie would have seen looking towards the camera. He'd have to be legally blind not to be able to see that the security light included a camera. Adding weight to address confusion the houses on the opposite side are quite out of step eg 83 opposite 52. I wonder if #82 finally got a letter that day?

On the contrary, the camera in question looks like a standard security light, not a camera.

Sorry, but it would be obvious in daylight from only 6m or so that the light includes a camera as well as a motion sensor.

I remember a senior cop once telling me the reasons most criminals get caught is because they're dumb.

The lens of the camera is fairly obvious when you're at the letterbox. A small white light starts up as soon as activity is detected. It looks like a camera is recording you, because it is.

While the sales brochures etc make it look like lights with a discrete camera, it's more obviously like a camera/light combo unit in the harsh light of day.

I have to say though - despite all the connotations of this particular incident, I have been very impressed with the camera's performance both day and night. I'd recommend to anyone thinking about installing a low-cost security camera/light combo.

Or… “Some critics consider Hanlon's razor to be an overly naive idea which can blind people to true malice. While people have malicious intent far less often than we think, it is still something which must be taken into account.”

surfisup1000:

Speaking from experience, i'd seen something suspicious once and thought it was criminal behaviour but turned out to be a simple explanation.

It looks dodgy ,but maybe you should find out first before posting the video with his face?

On my local Facebook community group this evening, somebody wrote the following:

"Just a heads up… my son just parked up outside our place on ** Road, close to *** Street and saw a guy dressed in black, with a beanie, duffel bag and black scarf covering his face so only his eyes were showing.  Man walked off towards **** Street. Didn’t call police as person did nothing wrong and disappeared by the time my son drove around the roundabout and returned home, just wanted to warn people in the area to keep an eye out for any suspicious movements. Stay safe. EDIT: have rung 105 and reported just in case"

In my head I'm like seriously??? This was around 7pm so it's probably just a perfectly normal guy who just got off the bus and is walking home, wearing a beanie and scarf cos it's 7 degrees in Christchurch this evening. For all we know he was wearing black dress pants and coat because you know - corporate. And I suspect the duffel bag contained his empty lunch box rather than crow bars or severed heads.  I just think some people jump to conclusions a bit too easily these days.

[EDIT: fixed line spacing]

Perhaps you didn't get to view the video before it got taken down, but these two scenarios are worlds apart.

The only other explanation for his actions is if the postie was looking at the front door of the house to try confirm the street number, and at last minute decided to do the right thing and deliver it to the right address and not just pop it into this mailbox.

But having been scammed myself in the last few weeks, despite doing background checks, I'm having to shift my default stance from naturally trusting to distrusting. When cost of living increasees as it has been, it pushes some otherwise good people to do irrational things out of desperation.

Handsomedan: Today, I had an unusual incident where at a glance, I believed I had received mail.
Alert on security camera showed the postie had been and we are awaiting a replacement Debit Card from the bank, so I went out to get it.

And? Is there an interim status or was it a misunderstanding and did the whole thing work out for the better after all?

NZ Post sent me an email saying thanks for the video and that's the last I heard.

New debit card turned up (I cancelled the one that was originally enroute) and I am none the wiser.

We've had about three different posties since, so I wonder if they are just having staffing issues and that one simply didn't know what/where/why.

Did the cancelled card ever turn up?

Coincidentally I was clearing a neighbour's letterbox yesterday and found several letters right number, wrong street. I think they have trouble riding an electric bike and thinking at the same time.
