Not much different to walking into 'New World' :-)
First Covid supermarket visit, they explained the rules to the queue.
Would you all doff your masks going in so our security cameras can get a good look.

No one ever got fired for putting too many security cameras up, but for the converse.
Plus with facial recognition etc if Camera A does not get a good aspect Camera B is there.
They probably have an excellent Government purchasing discount too.

Certain countries are targets for various reasons, so have to have very tight security.
Its just a pity the setting in a residential area.
A substantial berm between wall and footpath so its all stepped back from the road a bit would have helped soften the look.

Christchurch being quite proud of their streets and gardens I gather from someone who arrived to helpful notes on how to improve their front yard and thus the street.

The dramatic increase in cameras has certainly not deterred anyone visiting the Visa Office from parking IN the Cycleway!

Lemming effect (This refers to a phenomenon wherein crowds of people, across various fields of life, exhibit a certain kind of behaviour for no reason other than the fact that a majority of their peers do so)

means multiple large large SUV's parked in it this morning, even though PLENTY of LEGAL parks less than 15 metres away!

That's why a lot of the 'locals' call it the "Hansons Lane Parking Lot"!

That's particularly striking in Oslo where the royal palace is directly across the road from the US embassy. The palace grounds are open to the public, it's a huge park, you can go right up to the windows (although they're set high up so not easy to see into, and it would be a bit rude to do). People stroll through there, have picnics, do yoga, please mind the flowers when you're wandering around, and the gazebo by the pond back there is a great place for portrait photos. Just across the street is an ugly maximum-security prison - that's literally what it looks like - with the US staff cowering inside. Really shows the difference in the relationship between the public and the government/rulers in Norway vs. the US.

What it shows is the difference between an innocuous little country that offends no-one and an international superpower that everyone is trying to blow up. I'm no defender of American foreign policy, but there is a good reason for all that security. It didn't used to be so and it came about in response to repeated attacks and threats. The people working there have every right to defend themselves. Maybe they shouldn't be there at all, but that is a different matter.

All of the above and more. Most modern IP cameras are effectively a Linux based single board computer with a camera module. If they have internet connectivity they can potentially be used for DDOS attacks, but perhaps the biggest fear is that they could serve as an entry point that then allows lateral movement.

But that applies to any camera at all, not just Chinese ones.

And in fact anything and everything IoT. As the snarky comment goes, "the S in IoT stands for 'security'".

Do you mean the S in ID-IoTs? Hmm.

Pretty sure they haven't , there have been plenty of comments but no action....

UK and US have clamped down with them, but NZ has yet to do anything
https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/130806446/chinesemade-cameras-pose-potential-security-risk-to-new-zealand

"In November, the US and UK governments made moves to severely restrict the use of Chinese-manufactured security cameras in government buildings and public places.

CyberCX executive director of security Adam Boileau said New Zealand businesses and the government needed to follow suit."

I'm still trying to find an exact reference to this...

Around July 2021 Jacinda labelled China for 'human rights abuses'. What I am still trying to find is the full public addressing or statement made.

If it has been written; Rule 44 on supplier exclusion:

https://www.procurement.govt.nz/procurement/principles-charter-and-rules/government-procurement-rules/approaching-the-market/reasons-to-exclude-a-supplier/

"human rights violations by the supplier or in the supplier’s supply chain"

As far as I can see, there isn't a list avaliable to show what suppliers are on the excluded list.

NZ Govt has passed a law banning Hikvision on Human rights abuses.

@MarkM536, still waiting on your evidence to back up this statement.

Not sure it is law, but it appears MBIE dont allow Hikvision under rule 44

Maybe they were worried about what is going on with all the road works nearby?

BIG student party @ the house next to the Consulate on the corner of Blenheim Road Saturday Night!

Police "riot squad" cleared them out at about midnight, running after the big mob past the Consulate.

Bet the Consulate got good video!

Half came down our Street. Police just blocked Arthur Street @ Hansons stopping them returning.....didn't even step a foot in Arthur Street.

Consulate (I assume) parked a car at a right angle across their driveway gate!

Blenheim Road work site was decimated according to the Traffic Management person I spoke to this morning as she fixed the detour sign etc in our Street.

(They don't care about "minor" Roads after hours apparently! Even detours!)

Next step in "major security upgrade" would have to be getting rid of tenants next door.

Though maybe its a self for filling kinda thing.

Its not an attractive rental and living space due to an embassy with such a security footprint is there.
Combined with somewhat unfriendly way parking is managed by those who either work there or visit.
Blocking cycleway etc.

So you end up with rowdy students as they don't mind.

Maybe an embassy of this scale and nature is in the wrong place ?

But I can't find the video (maybe on FaceTube???) of the guy in a "Not a spy" T-shirt walking past the Chinese embassy (I think somewhere in USA) with a largish balloon on a string long enough to be seen over the walls.
