These two places have fantastic food with great atmosphere and a little outside of the viaduct which is a little bit less hectic on a Friday or Saturday eve if that's when you were thinking of going.

Amano in Britomart (Italian) - close to Caretaker as you have referenced earlier
Baduzzi in Wynyard Quarter (also Italian)

As has been mentioned earlier, Soul has consistently great food which has established itself as one of the long-stayers but it has more of a bar vibe there especially as it gets later...

Sails restaurant at the Westhaven marina has been my go to for celebratory meals.

Fantastic views over the water, great service, awesome food.

And not cheek by jowl with other diners, no loud ambient music and noise.

A tad on the pricey side, but have never been let down for either quality of food or service

Walk it off with a board walk around the marina

Sylvia park I cannot say much of for 'atmosphere'. The one restaurant I went to had generic food.

I think you should get the 'romantic' criteria as what chooses the restaurant.
A sea, harbour, city, or country view?
