Rikkitic:

NZ immigrant from 2004 following annual six-month visits from 1998, became a citizen and love it here. I have spent a lot of time in Australia on extended visits and have experienced every state except Tasmania. I appreciate the good things there, which are many, but have no desire to leave NZ. The perfect life is living here and visiting there. I will never understand the need some people seem to have to disparage this country and the institutions that make it work. Of course we have problems
(as do the Aussies!) but this is a great place to live and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

NZ is an extremely low population country. Ive been to many cities that are double or triple our size. Not ideal economies of scale. We dont get cyclones or hurricanes, we dont get seasonal flood events, seasonal wildfires. We are not a war target, in fact in my many travels "I know NZ its an island "just" of the Sydney coast. Or its just off England....   We don't have gold, tin, cobalt or diamonds. But we have remoteness, and space.

The most telling comment for me in the announcement was the Minister for Home Affairs (Hon Clare O’Neil) that the new policy was “All about reciprocity. So the rights extended to Australians living in New Zealand could be enjoyed by New Zealanders in Australia” (paraphrased). Effectively, now people will get a “fair go”.

Albo potentially has 350K more supporters also. (Minus Ozzies who think it’s the end of the world of course).

It's still not quite the same though, you still lack the equal right over there for the first 4 years until you can apply to be a citizen. They also still only welcome NZ citizens whereas here we welcome permanent residents of Australia the same as a citizen. It's definitely closer to parity having a pathway at all but not as equal as the comments are suggesting.

I think it's nice the options now there, making you stick around for 4 years to earn it seems fair but as it's 5 years here for them to get a passport there's probably pressure to reciprocate and let them get their passport a year earlier.

I think allowing people with only NZ PR into Aussie to apply and get aussie citizenship would be a mistake - They not NZ citizens, and therefore not really Kiwis. They dont really fit this discussion.
