Im struggling to understand what point you are trying to make with this thread. Climate change is important but singling out a natural disaster with biased reports is in quite poor taste.

There are some tragic events unfolding in this region currently.

F1 cancelled the Emilia Romagna GP and the following statement is why;

"The decision has been taken because it is not possible to safely hold the event for our fans, the teams and our personnel and it is the right and responsible thing to do given the situation faced by the towns and cities in the region. It would not be right to put further pressure on the local authorities and emergency services at this difficult time."

F1 is entertainment, people pay to watch and therefore there is a market. If there wasn't money to be made then they wouldnt continue to do it. Im glad they cancelled the last thing this region needs is the F1 circus in the middle of a disaster.

So is this thread about people watching a sport they love? About the poor management of logistics in F1 causing extreme amounts of CO2 or about the tragedy hitting this region of Italy right now. Other than this i think this thread should be locked as its really not appropriate to make light of a situation like what is happening in Italy.

100%  How many other circuses are there? Perhaps the OP would prefer that all sports, i.e. circuses, are all held in one city each, to reduce emissions, and only people in that city can go

Random complaint for the sake of it

Most things we do need to be reviewed in light climate change and sport is no exception. It maybe time that all ICE based motorsport be seriously considered and electric take it's place. It has already been successfully shown the F1 based E powered events are just as good if not better as driver and team skill really come to play.

F1 will get greener. Well if it's truly possible for a global event.
F1 needs the car manufacturers, and they won't be involved if they can't see a benefit. That's why Honda 'quit' in 2020. They needed to electrify their road fleet and F1 at that stage didn't help. However with the dropping of the energy recovery and expand the electrical energy component, Honda has got interested again.

So nothing to do with Honda sales down 10%? And profits down double that? How many times has Honda quit the F1 now? 3 or 4?

Its not the issue of how much fuel they burn in a race weekend, its carting it around the globe. But every other elite sport is the same to one degree or other

I think that offroad EV series is the only one that addresses the shipping issue.

Oh it's absolutely to do with their sales are at. Why would stay in such an expensive sport if it didn't add to their core business?

That's the running joke in F1, how many times Honda have quit 🤣 But then, if they too got the historical payment status they may have stuck around too!

Nice option. F1 races every 2 weeks, maybe 1 week, maybe 3 weeks so sea may be too slow?

In any case, every week there are masses of sports people travelling, and many many more spectators travelling to watch them. Not really sure why F1 is any different

The way sport in general is done needs a serious review and a push to become a lot greener. Covid showed that sports can be done without live audiences.

Sports such as high speed water sports need to be reviewed and maybe some will need to go. This also applies to some land based motorsports. The impact on the environment and ecosystems can be significant.

Suspect the co2 emissions of elite sport is minuscule compared to that of the global manufacture/supply chain.

I'd say the number of people that fly for holidays etc far outweighs the effect of sport related travel.

Where do you think some of the technology in your leaf for electric vehicles came from?

I don't necessariliy agree with the OP, but what technology was pioneered in F1 and adopted in mass market hybrids and EVs?

This post (in this thread) covered it pretty well: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=304591&page_no=1#3077491

Fully agree, but we need to do something to everything, not just cherry pick one sport or genre. How many sportspeople travel every week to another city, country. A really high number I suspect. NRL team Warriors, 13 players, 8 subs and the support network. Most weeks they fly. Factor in all the other teams, and NRL down under is tiny compared to other global sports. Soccer must be massive.
