timmmay: Soak the pipes in the bath in floor cleaner or bleach for a year, in summer, then hose them out outside.

For how long?

Gurezaemon: At the risk of hijacking the thread, what are the pros and cons of buying a 'shop-vac' type of thing that can double up as a house vacuum? I'd like something that clean up water spills as well as things like sawdust as well as just vacuuming the house.

Talked to someone in an appliance store many years ago and they recommended against it because they're designed for different scenarios, shop vacs for brief high-power runs and house vacs for extended runs at lower power.  They said they wouldn't recommend and/or warrant a shop vac for extended-runtime house vacuuming.

They do get noisier and noisier with use, I assume the cheap brushed motor is wearing its brushes and bearings out, but the first ryobi I got for $79 about 10 years ago is still working fine, just sounds like something screaming inside it when on and smells like a slotcar set when operating. They are noisy and have a stupidly short cord. Bags are huge compared to the little vacuums and I will get months out of a bag for the one in the house.

Noise might be a problem if you want to clean when other people are at home, other than that I just stick to daytime hours cleaning so the neighbours dont get upset about it. I put more hours on the one that I use as a shopvac hooked up to the sander and I think it has a harder time too as there is more restriction on its flow with the small opening to the sander.

I know power consumption is not an absolute indicator of suction force but 890 watts seems on the low side to me. How does that work out in this case?

Did the appliance store even sell shop vacs?  Ive seen a more believable answer somewhere that it isn't a good idea to use too much suck on carpets rather use the rotating brush head of a domestic vacuum to move the fibres around so just the dirt comes out. If the shop vac can be dialled back it would possibly run cooler than a compact domestic vacuum.
