I suspect during Summer the heat exchanger may struggle to achieve the colder water temperature I like unless we use aircon to keep the bedroom around 20C or below at night, but I can test that then.

I missed this earlier on, but if you have aircon, could you not leave that on instead? We have ours on cooling at 18C all night, all year (Auckland) as I run a bit hot. Might mean a thicker duvet for your partner but for me it's been bliss. So much so if we sleep somewhere else I can struggle if the room isn't cool enough.

Currently (Christchurch winter) room is around 18 most of the night even without aircon, sometimes drops as low as 16. Aircon on it's own wasn't a viable solution for me. Will probably use it in Summer in conjunction with the cooling topper.

How much do you eat at the end of the night?

I found myself sleeping MUCH better overall when I made my evening meal lighter, and try to have it as early as possible. Now that I've worked on it, I'm really sensitive to if I've eaten too much, and I feel my body just heating up.

Might not apply to you, but just thought I'd mention as it was a big solution for me.

I can't give you any suggestions, but as another anecdote we have a latex mattress (Sleepyhead - I believe they no longer make them) and I do not have the heating problem you mentioned.

After using this one we would never go back to springs.

Further evidence that the problem is me!

I decided to just go ahead and order the active cooling pad. Not the cheapest thing in the world, but any other half decent topper would cost a few hundred anyway and I feel like this has the best chance of making a noticeable difference without having any impact on my partners comfort. And since it's not a thick topper it hopefully won't impact the feel of the mattress too much.

For any other hot sleepers interested, I'll post feedback once it arrives.

Even under the mattress protector the tubing is still a little uncomfortable. I stuck an additional 500gsm wool quilted duvet I had spare on top of that of that as an additional underlay between the pad and sheet, that makes 730gsm of cotton and wool between me and the cooling pad now. Unsurprisingly it doesn't feel as cool to lie on, but it still kept me from overheating all night and was a lot more comfortable. I put this over the entire mattress to kept from having one side looking too high, and partner had no complaints after sleeping with the extra wool layer on her uncooled side.

If it continues to work well this way I might spring for a proper wool underlay, but the fitted sheet seems to hold the wool duvet in place securely so I'm in no rush to spend more money if I don't have to.

Hi there. I’m wondering what active cooling solution you are using, and if you are still using it?

i have the same issue you reported. I wake up about four hours after falling asleep feeling like the bed is actually heating me (!) like having an electric blanket on. Very frustrating as before I brought my current (theoretically high quality mattress) I used a simple inner spring and it was fine. Like you, I’ve tried all sorts of passive strategies, and I’m in Dunedin so ambient temperatures in the winter really aren’t an issue.

I’m now at the point where I’m willing to cast the current mattress into a spare room, but am really wary of anything with lots of foam (even though they are claimed to be better). There is so much contradictory comments online!

I have started to look (very loosely at this point) at these: https://www.eightsleep.com/au/product/pod-cover/

Very expensive, and not available in NZ.. but I go to Australia enough to sort that out.

No idea if they are any good etc.. just showing it as a product / option.

There is almost nothing in an innersprung mattress. It is a good candidate for simple positive pressure ventilation.

Yeah I’ve been wondering about that very thing. Sure it won’t last as long, but costs a fraction of the cost the flasher alternatives.

Pricey!!  I did comment to a retailer who showed me a particular bed “I’ve brought cars for less” 😆

Do you share bedding or each have your own top sheet and duvet?

This will allow you to have something light weight while also not having the added heat from your partner coming to your side and warming you up further?

Or dump the duvet.

For the past year I’ve slept under a sheet and a small blanket. Only tend to cool down about 4am where I might pull the duvet back.

I just fold it into the middle so it doesn’t impact my partner who likes the weight of a duvet.

It’s true that by having more layers, you can ‘tune’ your experience more. I’ve found lighter Duvets with one or two wool blankets (seasonal) can be effective but that 4am thing - that’s  exactly where I’m at and I can’t decide what’s worse; waking up a bit chilled and needing to add a layer, or waking up too hot and shedding one!

Really aiming for a consistent sleeps!

I prefer the wake up. Cos quite often I don’t unless it’s particularly cold.

Being too host at night was a killer for me. And caused a bunch of unnecessary washing

It's an usual heat though. My whole body isn't overheating and I'm not sweating. But after laying in the same spot for too long it starts to feel like I'm lying on an electric blanket. I tried it with less covers, but that just results in me being cold on top and hot underneath!

Bedframe is timber slats, so plenty of airflow. Sheets and mattress protector are both cotton, so breathable.

At this point I'm pretty sure I'm the problem, and even if I could argue with the store to swap it to something else I'm not convinced anything else would be better. Plus, if we got something cooler I think partner would find it too cold. So what are my options?

I think you just don’t like one of the benefits of heavy latex foam.

We only use latex mattresses and they tend to be full latex, no other base layers, 15cm or more deep, with only a thin cover and no toppers. These mattresses are heavy and hold a lot of heat so they work much like you describe. I love the comfort of the retained heat but one of my children doesn’t like this and complains when she has to sleep over.

We have one mattress with no more than 10cm of latex and it definitely feels cooler to sleep on such that my son added a thin memory foam topper which makes it feel hotter - it also makes it more comfortable so he can’t feel the slats in the bed base.

PS I should have included two points:

The heat effect is due to the foam density and the vertical ventilation holes don’t stop this.

I often hear people say they have latex mattresses when they only have a few cm of latex with other layers underneath and above, often a wool layer on top. These feel very different.

I simply sleep on top of the bed with a light blanket over me.

She has fluffy sheets, blanket, duvet and sometimes the electric blanket on.
