To those criticizing the security guards, these folk are minimum pay workers with very limited training. They are there as a visual deterrent for petty crime such as shop lifting. They are neither trained nor equipped to intercede to try to prevent an armed raid by multiple offenders. That would escalate the situation and likely result in a tragedy. Remember movies and TV shows are not real life.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Also I thought that MHJ stuff displayed was just Paste Jewelry with little value, and the real stuff would either be out the back or ordered in. You see Jewelry stores overseas and they have just one entry/exit and security doors. and it has been like that for years. So I don't think their stores are fit for purpose. The mall could have closed all the doors to stop the perpetrators leaving, but IMO it is better that each store has it's own security doors, especially something like a Jelwery store. Even banks are far more secure.

A prestigious jewellery store in my local mall (which also has a MHJ) has just one entry/exit, no security guards, and it's not open plan.
I have not heard of any thefts from there (nor the MHJ at that mall - yet).
I do think that the closed-off layout of that store is a huge deterrent. And also they don't have many things on display inside the store.

[Edited to change from security to security guards.]

In the video the Michael Hill security guard can be seen just watching it happen. Like seriously, I always thought it was silly each store has a security guard now but really, what are they going to do here?

I really don't understand what the purpose of security guards are if they can't actually apprehend an offender. Why don't  these malls hire police to patrol the place.

Because the Police don't have the ability to hire out their services to private property owners.  If an individual hires someone to patrol the place, they would be... security guards.

The idea that it is ok to take things from others by force.

That might makes right

The idea that it is 'ok' that people are stealing, because their stealing isn't actually hurting the company (because they're insured)

That is a daft take and that's the nicest way I can put it. I was going to post an explanation of why, but I honestly feel it would be a waste of time.

Think the situation through some more.

Recently a security guard at an Auckland supermarket got involved and was stabbed with a screwdriver to remind him not to bother next time.

I'm wondering if that guy was wearing a stab proof vest. I believe the security at one of my paknsave have been wearing them for a couple of years now + at least one guy at my warehouse. They look like tactical stabproof vests anyway.

Every MHJ I've seen in a mall has a wide walk-in doorway and an open layout. They probably can't change that casual walk-in aspect without changing the business model. I'd guess that would need a big expansion in advertising and regular doorbuster deals to get people in a press-to-enter scenario.

I should have read the news first. The guard's involvement was escorting someone  who'd previously been trespassed out of the store. He was stabbed in the arm. A stabproof vest doesn't help there.

Stab proof and bullet proof vests aren't there to stop you getting shot or stabbed, they are to protect your essential organs and prevent that from killing you.

Stabbed in the arm isn't great but it's not likely to kill you.

Before you point out there are other places to get shot and stabbed, you are vastly over rating the accuracy of most shooters and knife weilding thugs. If you face a professional, nothing will save you except a similar level of training.

This is where you need facial recognition. They didn't approach the mall with balaclavas on, right? Cameras at mall doors recognise any previously convicted, trespassed, etc, individuals as they enter the mall. AI in the background adds them up to assess the risk - how many are currently inside the mall, age, level of offending, etc. Low level risk - trigger a notification to mall security. Higher level risk - notify the MHJ security guard to empty the store and drop down the security mesh or rolling gate, whatever they have. And if they enter the mall with balaclavas on - get the alarm going as they enter, will spook them away.

Heh, Kiwis are against cencus information being collected. Facial recognition ROFL there would be rioting.

I am personally for it, but we would need a lot worse than some jewelry stores being robbed and get it passed.
