Watch: Bayfair Shopping Centre evacuated following brazen daylight smash and grab - NZ Herald

Having your open plan stores is just encouraging, and fog cannons do zilch in those stores. Once the crooks are breaking the cabinets, they already know where they are and what they're doing. "Oooo a smoke machine, scary....".

Polycarbonate instead of glass in the display cases. Problem solved.

In the video the Michael Hill security guard can be seen just watching it happen. Like seriously, I always thought it was silly each store has a security guard now but really, what are they going to do here?

In normal countries, this is how normal stores operate. It will be a sad day for NZ if this has to change due to the crime. Can't blame MHJ for the crooks.

Then how would we check the diamonds are real?

Not that I'd buy from them.

I would like to know what the thieves do with the jewellery

Second hand jewellery has little resale value.

Hot second hand jewellery will have even less value.

Diamonds are only worth so much because of De Beers marketing and control of supply. As a commodity they're not that rare.

I guess one could melt the gold down and sell it but the thieves probably don't have the intelligence to do that - they'll just flick it off to a fencer for $50 or a pack of smokes

With the price of gold at NZ$3300 / oz they will be melting them down and selling for scrap.

Gangs are not as dumb as you think, they will have a gold / pawn shop on their books that they will sell / launder through probably using stolen drivers licences.

The diamonds will probably be sent overseas and sold.

This springs to mind, but good news he did get caught.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/dealer-melted-down-stolen-heirlooms/EJAKXYZL67K2TUTWG7TDILL2CE/

The gangs to own a lot of business to launder money through, it is one of those open secrets that nothing gets done about.

I got chatting to a guy who's a social worker in Auckland, and some of his clients were the kids involved in a couple of the MHJ heists in Auckland.

They did it for the gram.   They recorded it and uploaded it to the socials.

They gave a lot of it away, still had some on them when caught, and didn't have a big plan for what to do with it after.

Discouragement for more honest criminals, ie petty theft.

In these sorts of situations they are

a. Told not to intervene, its too risky

b. Are paid minimum wage, so its not worth their health to get hurt.

It would actually make more sense to have a "trojan" piece of jewellery with something like an Apple AirTag built into it so they can track down where they actually go to and start wrapping up all the middle men.

They can throw their radio at the crims. They can say "Hey, you! Stop that!" in an authoritative voice. They can try to guilt the thieves by saying "What would Jesus/your mum think?"

See? They have options!

Probably why they just stand back. At least this one tried to do the right thing.

Take one for the team and secure a prosecution for an actual offense that may lead to jail time.

I say may, because I was on the jury for a wounding with intent to injure case and he just got ~12 months home detention.

I had to take a 2nd look. As the wording seemed strange for this being posted yesterday.

Nope. Another one today it seems.
