'Cards' don't weigh much when added to Google Wallet, Stocard or equivalent, just saying...!

I haven't carried a barcode-equipped card in my wallet for a number of years...

Not everyone is a tech expert like you.

I have never participated in any of these loyalty schemes because I hate the idea of carrying around a whole lot of cards and having to keep track of how each scheme works and which card to use at which outlet.

I don't think the threshold for using these apps is to be a 'tech expert', as that would exclude me! A number of people who I've introduced these apps to have gone on to use them - all done by themselves, and none of them have been particularly tech-savy.

My sense is it's not so much the level of difficulty of loading or using the apps (as they are pretty straight-forward), but more about things like lack of awareness/dislike or fear of tech/an assumption they'll be tricky to use/privacy concerns/inertia etc.

It proved to be difficult for me to earn enough points to redeem for anything worthwhile. I did manage to get some nice glass food containers once though.

RNZ has a good story on why Fly Buys fell over: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/518338/what-went-wrong-for-flybuys

I like how RNZ uses the logo for flybuys (Coles Group/Wesfarmers' loyalty scheme for Australians) not FlyBuys (Loyalty NZ's loyalty scheme for New Zealanders). They are not the same.
