One thing to know about Sabine is that she's a very vocal and public critic of the Faith of the Sacred String, which a lot of physicists' funding, tenure, and careers depend on.  And she also criticises a lot of... dubious academic practices.  That hasn't made her a lot of friends in academia.

 

You need someone like her to stir things up a bit in a ossified field where everyone just keeps their head down and hopes the funding continues.  There's another field I know of where a similarly scratchy personality has probably contributed more in the last ten years or so than everyone else in the field combined.
