Funeral service for Nick MacKechnie

10am, Monday 1 December 2025

Oaklands Chapel, 500 Wigram Road, Halswell, Christchurch

Nick’s service will also be livestreamed using this link.

https://view.oneroomstreaming.com/index.php?data=MTc2Mzk1NTQ1NzE4MDc3MjEmb25lcm9vbS1hZG1pbiZjb3B5X2xpbms=

(There is no need to register beforehand – just register when you are ready to watch the service. The recording will be available for 90 days after the service.)

If you choose, please wear something that represents a personal connection with Nick – Speight’s, Highlanders or Crusaders rugby, Holden cars, greyhounds, company slogans, rude slogans, something related to travel or locations of importance with Nick that you share. He wanted this to be a celebration of his life and the people he loved.

We will have a private interment immediately following the service, with family and close friends only.

We then invite you to join us at Speight’s Alehouse, Tower Junction from 1pm for an “after-match” function to raise a Speight’s to Nick, continue to celebrate his life and share more stories of Nick’s shenanigans.

Thank you again for your ongoing support of Nick's family, Liam, Lachie, Simon, Phil, Fleur and the wider family.

A wonderful service. Rest in peace, @NickMack. What an amazing person. You'll be sadly missed, but never forgotten.

I am late to this and just found out the news.

To Nick's family and the wider Geekzone community who knew him (far better than I) I extend my deepest sympathy and condolences at what was a sudden loss :(

I knew Nick though the BBS scene ... returning to the New Zealand scene around 2012 I found only a few BBS still running of which Trashcan was one of them.

I logged in left some messages and struck up a chat or two with Nick.

As time passed I picked up a Fidonet feed for my BBS from the Zone 3 coordinator (Z3C)  in Sydney and then began acting as the New Zealand Regional Coordinator (RC57) system feeding Fidonet to some other NZ BBSes covering a mix of packets of echomail, netmail plus weekly files (nodelist, etc.) so it's via this latter connection I had semi-regular contact with Nick.

Around 2015 I started fsxNet and in time Nick also opted to take a feed of that message/file network... having some NZ based BBS picking up that FTN network was a buzz.

Nick was always kind, funny, passionate, knowledgeable, and just came across as a down to earth guy who enjoyed working in IT but never forgot the fun he had and his roots in the BBS scene from back in the 90s.

I think the fun I had running a BBS in the mid 1990s in Hamilton also never left me so it was only a matter of time before I circled back to a (now) retro but seemingly still popular hobby among many of my age..and others much younger who are sick of social media, algorithmic tracking and ad suggestions etc.

Anywho I'm waffling a bit now, but kind thoughts and aroha to you all. I hope that the lovely sentiments shared here by other GZ members will bring the family and his close mates a degree of comfort as to what a special man Nick was.

Best, Paul.
