Browsed the App this morning (iOS). Prices on the whole look quite attractive.

It's going to give Freedom et al a real hurry up. Even Kmart isn't looking so cheap now. The Warehouse (IMO) has been left behind now for setting up a home on a budget.

One of my friends in Aus got me some Tisken towel racks for AU$12, they're selling here for $14.99 which is surprisingly good. Even the small stuff like the clear soap dispenser is $1.50 here only.

The thing Ikea really need to crack is closing the cycle for MDF. Ie; MDF recycling. I'd like to think someone in NZ has already cracked it and just needs some funding. MDF is in absolutely everything now and an environmental nightmare. Ikea's commitment to closing the cycle by 2030 is impressive if they're really putting the effort in.

I wonder if they'll do the conditional buyback scheme in NZ and sell used in the physical store in NZ like they started doing elsewhere recently.

I think I did see something about this in one of the many many promo pieces they are doing with TVNZ (or maybe the Herald).

Gotta say, their marketing thus far has been impeccable. Even NZTA is in on it :)

I have to say, some of that stuff is both fairly interesting looking and well priced. I wonder how long we should wait for the hype to die down. Hopefully, everyone leaves Auckland over the Xmas break...

Based on the old stores in London I'd say when they have another 2 shops open. The Brent cross one used to be totally ridiculous backing up on to the main road. Pretty sure it's still bad now decades later but definitely improved when people had an alternative.

So it appears their pricing is largely on-par with AU.

I've had my eye on a sofabed from Ikea for a while (Vimle 3 seat sofabed with chaise) and in AU it's $2199AUD and here in the same fabric it's $2399NZD, so if you factor in GST and currency difference, we're (for once) not being reamed.

Regarding traffic and Ikea,

I'm waiting for the Spinoff story about how much they manged to buy at ikea, then get home on their cargo bike/eScooter. - (pretty sure the ikea PR crowd will have such a story planned and paid for )

They will have to also include the fact that the said scooter/cargo bike/eco-transport was aided by a simple, easy and inexpensive train trip from one of the fabulous stations on our amazing public transport network.

Trying to log into my existing ikea app now has added the new zealand option to choose but it tells me the app needs upgrading and opens the play store to the page for the app. Im wondering if its the same app or the one thats waiting on the play store with a NZ google account is actually a different app - has the same author on it.

Although, I'll be damned if I'm going to drag a Billy bookcase up the escalators from the CRL stations when they open.... :)

Friend was telling me about much worse that they did in england 20ish years ago when kitting out their slumlike flat from ikea and other places since they had no car and nowhere to park one.

They have a logistics centre near the airport, plus there will be regional drop off zones. Personally I'll try to make use of home delivery

Shipping outside of Auckland isn't that cheap, over 8kg will be $50. Not sure if that's per item or per order. I thought it might be slightly cheaper as they have made a song and dance about main freight Depot collection points so figured they might have had agreements in place on key distribution routes around the country based on volume that they anticipate shifting.

Either way I think both Bunnings and mocka have upped their game, mocka suddenly has more shops and Bunnings is offering more furniture brands in store. They are definitely not offering the IKEA experience but a little competition can be a good thing to push existing players along.

Also I noticed that many vendors of inferior metal furniture have been discounting their lines considerably. But looking at ikea, they are only doing the metal TV cabinets in white which is a shame. Guess I will have to pick something from the spraycan cages at bunnings to improve them.
