I think a mistake many people make is getting one dog.  Two dogs will entertain each other.  You won't get boredom-barking or anxiety-howling.  You will still get territorial barking, but that can be managed with fencing, planting and training.  But yeah, dogs can smell.  Cats do too.  I can smell a house has cats the minute I walk in.

With cats it is usually the litterbox. If you actually smell a cats fur there should usually be no smell at all. But maybe some do due to diet etc

Cats are a lot less work than dogs. Less expensive, quieter, less demanding. Probably shed less too, being smaller. Nothing wrong with having two :)

The job of a dog is to drag the owner outside and get some exercise. Maybe even converse with other people they meet while the dog drags them around the block. It is an important job, cats couldn't do it.

This is true and one of the reasons we switched from cats to dogs but as we get older I can see why you’d also want to switch back. Or skip pets entirely. Cold winter morning walks get harder!

I disagree about two dogs. One can be fine if you’re home all the time or most of the time. We’ve gone from two to one and have his relatives over frequently. He spends 5 minutes with them then is happy to go back in the house. Quite a house dog our guy.
