Really? pretty much all instructors will tell you to leave it in gear, particularly on a hill

I do if I'm parked on a steep hill (MR2 handbrakes are pretty bad) but not on low inclines.

What he said. If the car is on the flat then neutral is the right place to put the stick. Steep hills are the exception.
Unless it's an automatic. :-)
