I fully agree with smaller fines and more demerits and I think the majority of police would agree. Sometimes giving out $400 fines to kids still at school for breaching their licence conditions makes you wonder how on earth they are going to pay for it. Having more power to take other action, like impounding a vehicle for repeat breaches would be more sucessfull.

Agree. Paying a fine doesn't really worry me too much. Losing my license which affects my whole life and job does.

When a cop is patrolling traffic all day then the 'pushing ON on radar' is not so infrequent and "breif" methinks.

I was just making an observation. Fiddling with *ANYTHING* while driving a car would surely be as equally dangerous. That's why I'm going to stop using my indicators ha ha ha...

i think that's why the goverment brought the police Automatic Transmisson Police cars so that they can operate the lights and siren and use the stalker remote. but then point he finger at us for using cell phones.

Back To the Topic i think most people are against radar detectors Beased on what people have said on this Theard have ever i see it's more people that don't use radar detectors they are the people that are against them.

Personaly i Used An Escort 8500 X50 about 95 Percent of the Time I go the speed limits or under depending on the Conditions or if other Drivers are look like they are unsure on what they are doing i slow down.

5% Cent of the time i speed. how ever no ones perfect im human too i believe everyone who drives at some time or another has broken the law and driven over the speed limit

I put one of those radar door openers and a switch in my old car, I caused many a boyracer or pavement crawler's tyres to go up in puffs of smoke, HIT THOSE BREAKS (yes I know it's "brakes" but I'm taking the mickey a bit to the intelligence of the general drivers)

I have an old modified radar dectector (ancient Creative Q4000 modded to go wider band), it's hardly ever used for actual cop evasion, more for spotting radio links and other pollution such as other radar detectors. It's very good on the new cop cameras though, It picked up two on the highway heading up past porirua and then another at paraparam on friday afternoon. It's also flawless at detecting the aformentioned door openers. After you leave Wellington nd hit Horophenua, you normally see proper visible patrol cars as a reminder to watch your speed and get you If you are actually doing it, the revenue gathering is a Wellington thing for sure as it's always noticed on trips out of town.

I'm not interested in getting into the 'radar detectors should/should not be banned' debate, but the comment above does raise a question for me. How does a cop fiddling around with their radar while driving differ from a driver trying to operate their mobile phone while driving? Similarly dangerous I would expect?

I reckon! And how come the police are allowed to speed when they chuck their lights/sirens on but when I do it, I not only get a ticket for speeding but one for the lights too!

What are we talking about here, under car lights, spotlights or a full on mobile disco?

Replica police lights... ;)
