There is a lot of difference: what we have been discussing are ideas, and the examples you put are actions that actually harm people.

So who decides where this barrier is? Is this not a bit like cartoons depicting Jews as sub-human that were put out by the Nazi's in the 30's. Or our modern example of depicting the Muslim prophet and therefore all Muslims as terrorists. I think that these types of so called light hearted entertainment have an effect on the way that people think of those that are alligned with those depicted i.e. catholic bashing.

I think that religion should be treated with the same respect as race and sexual preference. You could not show a program that attacked either of these things - or if you did people would be up in arms.

However if you are not careful your ideas and ideals can result in people being harmed. If you look at the cartoon debate, what was gained by the news media publishing those cartoons. All it did was inflame already high tension between the west and muslim countries. Now im one of the most liberal pro-democracy people around. Sure its our prerogative to publish cartoons. But one must be pragmatic, what did showing them achieve, did it in anyway benefit people to publish them, when all you have done is infuriate 1.3billion people around the world?

What if i was to take a leak on the US constitution in a momentary fit of madness or act of protest.

Mohammed and the Constitution form the backbone of the islamic and american socieities and people should learn to respect the values and ideals that others hold dear.

Nicely put, however, it is also popular in the "Muslim world" to burn our flags, but we manage to not burn down embassies, I'm not sure there is equality between the "crime" (cartoons vs. burning flags) and the response (crossing into another nations territory and burning buildings vs. nothing).

I will never condone the actions of the muslims with regard to violence. What they do doesnt matter. Just because they are burning flags attacking embassies etc doesnt mean we should lower our standards of behaviour to meet theirs. The west has always considered itseslf on the side of right, justice, tolerance etc etc itsnt it about time that we proved it.

When it comes down to it, we really are a civil bunch of people. Theres nothing like atagonising the opposing crowd however when it comes to TNZ vs VF however.

Its interesting to find out others views on such controversial (for lack of better word) topics

Good old C4 - the 'contentious' cartoon will air tonight. Expect to see Catholics rioting in the streets, burning embassies and TV studios and general anarchy and mayhem.

Thats right I forgot - they may be Catholics but they are civilised. Not like that other lot of lunatic thugs.

I've yet to hear anybody from Alcoholics Anonymous complain because their organisation was basically inferred as being a cult! :-)

The most ironic thing is the fact that many of the people complaining would not have ever seen to the show to form their own opinions because they were busy standing outside TV3 protesting!

Interesting on Stuff today:

Catholic Church spokeswoman Lyndsay Freer said the episode, which she watched on the Internet a few weeks ago, was gratuitously offensive.

Now you will note that Ms Freer watched this on the Internet. Was that legal? I am afraid if it wasn't legal it could be considered piracy and that would greatly offend me.
