He apologized - his employer accepted that. The media crucified him just like they did to tony v. Our media is not satisfied until they see someone broken and at the end of a noose I guess. The media should report the news not try and be the moral conscious for the people.

to be honest, I've been struggling with the concept that what he said was racist. I got that it was offensive, but racist ?

He laughs at the lady's name. This is rude, in fact the way he laughed could be considered offensive. He then said "...and it's so appropriate 'cause she's Indian". How you can not find this racist is beyond me.

I agree that it's been blown out of proportion by sections of the media though.

Other media were making similar jokes regarding the name. He was associating the name, with 'Dehli Belly' which is what many people get when they travel over to India, which is obviously a very upset stomach. I personally don't think that was raciest in itself, as it was referring to a condition well known to travellers who go to india.

If he was still on tv he probably would have made jokes about the NZer athete who is called Newdick.

Kyanar: Yes, he mucked up her name but then he was told how it's meant to be pronounced, and persists in pronouncing it incorrectly.

Sheila Has said herself thats how you pronounce it (Exactly how it sounds) Cant remember where I heard it, think it was TV1 and somewhere else.

No, it's not how you pronounce it.  I had a half hour lecture from an indian at work about how it isn't how you pronounce it.

They were all pronouncing it incorrectly, even the supposed correct pronunciation was wrong.

Tvnz ratings going down down down. Breakfast had high ratings and I wouldnt have had if people hated Paul. He is the reason they won the ratings war with Sunrise on 3.

I mean nobody is forcing you to watch the program if you dont like the presenter but it seems like there are people with no life that do watch it just to complain about it.

We are getting to the point of where you can't say anything unless it has been vetted by the PC police.

Yes, I think there is also a lot of the 'Tall Poppy' Syndrone' happening too. People love to see these public figures ripped down. It was also fuelled by the competing media companies. Sure, he made a mistake, but it wasn't something that he should have lost his job over. The presenter on this is your life tonight also made a mistake of a similar significance.

Yes what he said was offensive, but in no way should he have left breakfast.

Anyone that thinks otherwise, well, I wish he was here to say what I am quietly thinking

to be honest, I've been struggling with the concept that what he said was racist. I got that it was offensive, but racist ?

So maybe it's me !. Maybe I'm behind the times with the concept of racism, so I took a read of the link, and well.

"The reality is: it was a racist assumption that a Fijian Indian didn’t represent “New Zealand” since he, frankly, wasn’t white."

"wasn't white" !. - Yup, if PH had said "blah blah next GG should be white" to the PM, then sure, I got it - that's racism at it's worst.

But he didn't ! - the closest he came to colour was that the current GG does not "look" like a NZ'er. And the leap that he meant "not white" so he must a racist, and it's a racist comment  seems to have been the main drive by a lot of people/commentators on this on .

Is "does not look or sound like a NZ'er" by itself racist ?

I'm up for convincing on this. Part of me can see why racism comes into play here, but not for the
"wasn't white" aspect.

Could you elaborate why the comment "Not look like NZ'er" is not racist when the guy is an Indian fellow? I'm not Indian, I find that offensive and by saying that type of comment in daytime TV promotes racism and showing that it is acceptable in NZ society. I'm not surprise with his comments, it was going to come out sooner or later as he is that type of person like to offend people of different race, sexuality, gender and disability. The reason why certain people don't find that offensive as their already experiencing and promoting these type of comments so often in everyday life and workplace. They are so immune to this type of comments and they don't not find it offensive. It is probably Nz'ers way of life. Like common phrase "asian can't drive" which is very common in NZ society. It shows how arrogant some Nz'ers are even when they made the wrong manoeuvre in the road, the asian guy in the right always get the blame. I am currently working in a workplace which seems to promote racism quite often especially in my department. Originally when I first started I was really shocked but now I'm so immune to the racist comments and I couldn't give a toss about it and get on with my work. Probably the reason why some narrow-minded English people move over here as they feel so restricted in the UK workplace and find it more comfortable when working in a NZ environment. This is my take on NZ so far based on my four years here.

nakedmolerat: where is freedom of speech? he apologized - get over it and move on.

Anyone is free to say whatever they want. He said something inappropriate at work which has consequences.

Keywords here are "at work". "Freedom of Speech" is a political right. In private matters it simply doesn't exist.

correct me if i am wrong. whenever i said 'freedom of speech' - i referred myself to International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, especially article 18. i dont quite understand what do you mean by it is only a 'political right'.

again, my point is, Paul Henry apologized and everyone should just get over it. ohh his resignation came from himself - yeah right.

I think this case has shown that it wasn't acceptable. There is a difference between something that is offensive, and something that is raciest. He made a mistake and he has apologized for it. He obviously didn't think about what he was saying, before he said it, and he isn't the first person to do that.

When he referred to what a NZers looked like, NZ is now such a multicultural nation, that there is no clear definition of what a NZer would look like. That may not have been the case 50 years ago.

Are you trying to say the other comments he made about Susan Boyle as a retard is a mistake? Clearly someone of his intelligence and experience working in TV would have thought about his comments. When is it political correct to call a maori "brown ass" especially on radio. I heard that on the radio station around 3pm while debugging the OBDII bus. Very shocking!!. In my opinion it shows racism is a common way of life in NZ.

It perhaps shows his upbringing. My grandma says some things that today would be considered raciest or un PC, and is solely due to upbringing, and being set in their ways. The fact is that 20-50 years ago people used words differently. The word 'retard'  is derived from a medical definition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_retardation  . It is just like something positive, being referred to as 'gay' . The english language changes.

Words are use differently but the presenter with Paul Henry's intelligence should have known what is wrong to say in daytime TV. It is either he hasn't move on with the times so TVNZ has made the wrong choice for a presenter but probably not from the comments of the TVNZ media spokesman.

Of course your grandma comments would be considered racist now but during her time there was no zero tolerance. Just like policies in OZ before or during 60s that was considered acceptable. Anyway, comments like that seems to be acceptable in some NZ workplace nowadays so things has not changed in NZ.

I think it's a shame, I thought he was often pretty funny in the morning. A lot better than The Rock has become (what the hell happened there?) I'm not talking intelligent humour, just something silly to laugh at in the morning over coffee.

Totally agree what he said was wrong, even he acknowledged that and apologised for it. There's no excuse for such crass, insensitive and hurtful comments.

I especially love how people had to hunt around to find more stuff of his to be "outraged" against. How long after he said the Diksh1t thing did it actually take for people to be offended? About a week?

The fact a country can get so worked up over a silly little man saying such stupid little things says a lot more to me about the country than it does the silly little man.

Oh well, the bleeding hearts have got what they wanted, the head of a man they don't actually care about.

Update: Geekzone won't let me post her surname? Diksh1t?

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!
