I wasn't even aware there was a 1-day live site...

I use 1-Day and my rule of thumb is whether I am happy with the price I am paying for whatever I buy.
The 24 Redbull Shots for 13.50 delivered, very much so 56c a bottle as opposed to about $4 - $5 in the shop. The King of Shaves 5 pack for $24.99 [delivered] yeah sure, it was something I wanted and was happy to pay that price.

I usually ignore the "Why Pay" price as being some made up figure based on either the highest price the product has ever been sold for or the price for a better dearer version of the same thing. I have long assumed that "Why pay" was a phrase specifically designed to skirt the fair trading laws.
The "Why pay" is just a rhetorical question who's unspoken answer is usually "because nobody sells it for that price anywhere!" That and the sale price are two separate sentences like "Why stick a fork in your eye. This inflatable raft is now only $19.99"

I would like them to be more transparent and explain where the original prices are sourced from but it won't happen.

Having worked retail many years ago I was told that there are rules about what shops can call "Sale" prices. you can't just say "was XXX, now only XX" without having sold the item at XXX for a minimum period. Unless that has gone out the window.

The 1-day Live feature didn't live long, according to the NBR. And with reason.

Man that's addictive. I sat there for about 5 minutes watching peoples names and locations pop up.

Some unique names in some very small towns, so not exactly private, no.

1gkar: I can't believe anyone believes a RRP these days. A generation+ ago, it represented a reasonably accurate accounting figure based on the break-even costing per unit with an acceptable profit margin attached.

Nowadays, it is simply based on the adage of, "if we can sell for this amount, we will", even if it means the company is making 1000%. Take supermarkets, for example: they will continue to up the retail cost of a product until there is a certain percentage drop-off of sales. They then put it on "special" at various reduced rates to gauge the maximum price they can make.

If anyone doesn't have a concern with this tactic, don't EVER complain about being ripped off, because I do. The way they act make the oil cartel look prim & proper with business. At least they drop their fuel retail price (hope this last statement doesn't cause a hi-jacking of the thread: not my intention).

Some companies sell for way more than the RRP too. I was looking at logitech webcams, and the RRP on the logitech NZ website was $130, yet many stores were selling it for $200. On pricespy I managed to get it for $95 including shipping. So shopping around you can save alot.

Briscoes seem to go for about 25% above RRP so when they are doing in a "30% off" sale people think they are getting a bargin when in reality they could get it for that price any day of the week at Farmers or less than that at Moore Wilson if they are in Wellington.

Now back to the original topic, if anyone reads the 1 day site you'll see that the "why pay" price has to be realistic because they then go on to say "save $xx".  Today's deal has "why pay $1499.95" and "save $999" so the "why pay" price MUST be realistic or it's misleading advertising.

I can't think of one time I've seen where the amount has been truly misleading.  The OP was making a mountain out of a molehill.  He could have a point about the duck hunt thing, but I thought it was obviously a joke so shouldn't be misleading.  Just because you can find it cheaper elsewhere doesn't make their "Why Pay?" price misleading.

Agreed, but how do we know what 1-day are basing their RRP on?  I have often thought they tended to be on the more generous side.

Probably, but they're hardly going to put the cheapest price up there are they?  I'd think it's assumed you tkae those things with a grain of salt. They're "true" but still not much use.
