Blenheim: Mayfield Takeaways.. we have a codfathers here too, its pretty average unfortunately. F&C's are a bit cheaper than Nelson, but not by a lot.

Nelson: REELS in stoke.. best burgers in the top of the south!

You can blame the so called "fish and chip cafe" in the wood, for inflated prices, before they came along and jacked the prices up things were reasonable.

I find the further south you do down the country the cheaper it gets.. Invercargill is rediculously cheap, you can spend $5 and get a scoop of chips and a reasonable burger! a reasonable burger here starts at about $7

Back when I lived with my parents on the North Shore (+11 years ago), Ivans was our local. They did good fish and chips, but I don't think I would have called it award winning.

In Palmerston North, our local is Annies on Ferguson St and does a pretty good line of crumbed fish (warehou, I think) and do pretty good chips too. For a treat, you can get garlic chips, where they drizzle the chips with garlic butter. It does make them soggy, and it's no friend to the arteries, but it is very tasty!

When visiting family in Napier, we tend to go to a place down by the Port (think it might be the Frying Dutchman). Very nice fish and chips...

networkn: Where is Ivans?

I'd like to know where to get really good indian or chinese takeaways in Auckland/Central?

Hee's Garden in Mt Eden are decent takeaways.

For indian cuisine, i'm quite partial to Ruchi (Mt Eden Road) http://www.ruchi.co.nz
or Sayta (Sandringham, or K-Rd) http://www.satya.co.nz

For thai, my favourite local is Jungle Flavour http://www.menus.co.nz/listing/4nsp4x/jungle-falvor-thai-restaurant/
or Zap 2: http://www.menus.co.nz/listing/rpjy/zap-2-thai-cafe-bar/
Best thai i've had in aucklald is probably Khao (City - Chancery) but is on the pricier side: http://www.khao.co.nz/

Im wanting to know of a new good indian one since the beach haven one that was so good when the guy with the beard ran it, but since he has gone to aussie they seem to have their strengths all wrong with a feeble medium and a hot that varies between what I would call a medium and an "OMG WHAT THE F DID YOU PUT IN THIS" strength.

Fish and chips around here is average at best. Both the asian takeaways around here do aweful fish and chips.

For Indian food, there's a place in the food court at Albert St that does very good North Indian cuisine (They go by this name in the phone book). On acquiring a business card, you can call & order on the way and be met kerbside in your car pay/pick up. The butter chicken is very very good. Mild means mild and hot means bring your own extinguisher.

Pakuranga Fresh Fish is my favourite.

I only went to Oceanz once and it was expensive and crap, not to mention to 1 1/2 hour wait! never again, we only went there because the above took a day off!

There is (was?) a good Indian place in Castor Bay.
But haven't been there for a bit. Shalimar I think.

alasta: The one on Wakefield Quay, Nelson. I think it's called Haven Takeaways.

Further afield, I love the one at Port Melbourne.

Rex Hunt's Fish & Chips by any chance?

I should also mention "Tasman Fish Supply" in Foxton on SH1. We got our fish and chips there for years and their crumbed fish pieces were huge and cheap...and were good, solid fish.

I haven't been there for 2-3 years...so it may not even be there any more. But when I was there...it was the equal of anywhere.
