graemeh:
Aviation security is 90% show anyway, most of what they do is a complete waste of time but looks good for those who worry about these things.

I agree, however, in this case the following comment applies

"But if telling the cop you were just speeding to see if he would catch you and let you off works for you graeme, then run with it."

All these stupid antics do is help justify the need for security.  The perpetrators need to be given the maximum fine to deter any other d**k heads out there.

wmoore: Storm in a teacup. People seem to be getting rather worked up about this. Security did their job.

By Auckland judicial standards it sure is. His mate tries to get it off with his four year old and the Judge thinks he's such a comedic contribution to NZ culture that he gets let off free.

When the judiciary fails to take that sort of behavior seriously its no surprise that this sort of antic, within the shadow of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, is seen as just a bit of a laugh.

We have our indigenous Special People - it now seems we have our cultural Special People as well. In his mates case the police did their job and potted his mate who plead guilty -but the judiciary failed to do theirs. In this case Airport Security did their job and I suspect the judiciary will once again fail to step up.

"Airport Security" as in gate staff checking boarding passes. If it was a genuine passenger making a stupid remark about the content of their bags he would have had the specialist security on hand straight away.

6 wks in a jail cell with big bubba should be a good enough punishment. Or maybe a cellmate gang member just coming of P is another.

These clowns need a good deterrent, of course now they apologies and they didn't realize this would cause a panic, stupid stupid idiots. Send them to jail.

It wasn't funny because he got caught.  It would have been funny if he got through.  Its not like the guy would have attempted to fly the plane around.

...And no I've never seen the show.  I don't watch TV.

That cell is starting to get crowded. Another 3 arrested.

"The trio, who were arrested today include a cameraman, 27, a sound recordist, 40, and production co-ordinator, 24."

They've got enough to have a party now.

I wonder if they will test Police security by trying to just walk out :)

When the APEC roadshow came to Sydney a few years back The Chaser did a stunt a bit like this. They put a guy in Bin Laden mask in the back of a limo with motorbike outriders, a lead and chase care then drove up to the APEC security cordon.

I'm not sure what was funnier; the Sydney cop saying 'the road is yours' before waving them through or the chief of APEC security (another Sydney cop) at the press conference later saying "this is not funny!".

It is on YouTube and totally worth it.

I think this is different because we all know the result of this is more delays and problems at airports for us, normal everyday people. The APEC stunt was funny because it targeted the powerful.

Thing is that is kind of the major problem with Wannaben. Too many of the jokes is Ben trying to take the piss out of normal people just trying to do normal stuff around Auckland. Take the piss comedy is not funny when it targets the little guy.

Right? Wrong? Completely missing the point?

I still can't believe they (Airport Security) just let him walk out get in a van an drive off considering they think it's such a serious offence one would tend to think they'd take more serious actions to start with like detaining him until the police arrived

It wasn't security who stopped him it was the gate staff. They don't have any power to detain anyone.
