tchart: +1 for clearly contacts.
I do usually get a "bad vibe" from the optometrist when I ask for a copy of my prescription. Last time my wife went they even asked if my wife was going to order them online.
They do however need to be more competetive. Spec Savers has certainly levelled the playing field - I recall paying $600 for glasses 6 or so years ago. Last visit was $300 or so all up. Clearly contacts cant do my exact prescription though.
Compare that with my wifes experience; $60 for eye test, $70 for two pairs of glasses from clearly contacts. So $130 all up.
Its especially good for kids. My son (<10) has about 5 pairs of glasses from clearly contacts since he always misplaces them. Im less inclined to freak out over $35 for new glasses than $300.

Jaxson: I had a bad experience with clearly contacts that was actually a great one.
I had problems with purple fringing/Chromatic aberration and it turned out it was due to the choice I made to 'upgrade' to polycarbonate lenses. (Never again!). Anyhow when I queried what I was seeing they assumed it was due to a manufacturing fault so sent another set of glasses which did the same thing.
I then did the research myself and found out what was happening and ran it past them. They weren't too familiar with the whole thing which is where you're reminded that you're dealing with an online customer service desk etc. They remade the whole thing with basic plastic lenses and sent that out, again at no charge and this sorted it. So all in all it was a great result and great customer service from their end, just annoying that I needed to sort the technical eye stuff myself via some aggressive googling!
Jaxson:
It's a good point to ask for your PD as well when you get your eyes tested. Often they won't put this on the script but you should ask whilst you are in the appointment.

freitasm: In geek terms, they are not "open" then? Well, it's your data, you should be able to get it from them anyway - it's part of the Privacy Act - they have to comply with your request to supply any data they hold that is related to you...

My experience with specsavers and opsm was "sorry but no. We don't give that out unless you buy some glasses"
Jaxson: I would be re evaluating where I spent my money then.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.
