When people invent their own symbols for units instead of using the standard SI ones (such as travelling 20 "KMS" - "Kelvin mega siemens").

Adults with lists of things they refuse to eat, normal stuff like kinds of meat or vegetables, when they're a guest and are having meals provided to them. Not allergic, just "eww no, I'm not eating that." Isn't part of being an adult eating what's put in front of you?

Adults with allergies that they inform you about, but you've been exposing them to whatever it is for weeks with no ill effect.

That's a bit sad IMO.

I love it when people "drop in" uninvited, friends, neighbours, family. If I/we have other plans, then it's not a problem to tell them. If we don't, then we've had some great impromptu parties etc.

I'm more uncomfortable with the concept of having to make formal arrangements / invites to "catch up" out of a sense of duty with people who used to be friends or acquaintances. Especially when visiting cities where I used to live, and in some cases under pressure that if I don't make arrangements to visit and they inevitably find out, their noses get put out of joint and the "catch-up" thing becomes even more awkward.

I don't think it's a big issue to have foods you don't like, and so don't eat. Would be impolite to say "ewww no...", but if they politely eat the rest and just leave what they don't like I don't have a problem.

I think the issue is how it's done. I'm a vegetarian and make a point of explaining that well in advance. If necessary, I am prepared to bring my own food. I ate corned beef once, many years ago. It was on a remote island of Fiji, I was the special guest of the local village head, he made a point of instructing his wife to feed me something special, so she rushed off in the night to the lady who sold things (can't really call it a shop) and came back with the tin of corned beef, which I already knew was extremely expensive by local standards, certainly on this remote island. To have refused it would have been highly insulting, not to mention churlish in the extreme, so I ate it, with much thanks. It didn't kill me.

While on the food subject - then I intensely dislike pot-luck dinners where I don't know who cooked what...

I went to a SWMBO pot-luck "work do" a few years back, where somebody rocked up with some kind of quiche which was so immaculately presented, a piece ended up on everyone's plate. It contained hard lumps of uncooked kumura - evident as soon as you dived in to it with knife and fork, but worse, it tasted so sulphurous/putrid that it must have contained rotten egg(s) or sat on a bench for a few days. I didn't pick up an off-odour until too late, some of this was already in my mouth prompting an involuntary gag response - and a rush for a napkin in which to dispose of it, out of politeness disguised as a fit of coughing. Sitting around a room with 30 or so people, all with empty plates - except nobody got further than one bite into the so-called quiche, and nobody saying a word about it, all showing signs of obvious discomfort/embarrassment - probably including the unknown person who arrived with that tray of vile poison.

I just dislike pot luck dinners.

I guess it's OK in the "work do" context, where there might be quite a large number of people plus partners, kids, etc. but when it's just friends it's basically saying "I'm inviting you for dinner but can't be @r$ed actually making you dinner, so bring your own".

Also, I always try to put some thought and effort into making something that will taste nice, allowing for any restrictions like vegetarians, gluten free, etc. if I know them. Then some lazy b@st@rd shows up with two loaves of Pak n'Save in-store bakery bread rolls that they picked up on the way over, on special because it was the end of the day...
