FineWine:

Herald headline: Toddler taken to hospital after drowning in pool at Wairarapa home

A toddler has been taken to hospital after drowning in a pool at her Wairarapa home yesterday.
Loved ones have been donating to a Givealittle page for 1-year-old Laylah-Mae after the “devastating” incident. She remains in hospital, with her mother by her side.

If the child drowned, they would not be in hospital and being flown to Star-Ship.

Drowning is death from suffocation after being submerged in liquid, while "near-drowning" (now called non-fatal drowning) describes surviving a submersion incident, potentially with injuries.

Sensational headlines and incorrect text.

A Very Sad end to this story: Baby girl dies days after near-drowning in home pool in Wairarapa.

But the Herald has at least corrected their initial headline mistake.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

"Monkey bar accidents head rising playground injuries"

"Data from ACC shows the number of injuries relating to playgrounds across New Zealand has been increasing, from 12,562 claims in 2021 to 14,666 in 2024."

https://www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/360907334/swinging-monkey-bars-cause-most-playground-injuries

My God, has this reporter been living under a Rock, ....

Did they not even think that a 3 month closure of all schools in Auckland with the 2021 Lockdown MIGHT JUST lower the number of playground injuries reported in 2021... given they 1/3 of the countries kids were barred from even going to school, let alone having the opportunity to have an injury in the playground....

"Lies, damn lies and statistics" seems an appropriate quote

It's all very well quoting statistics but without looking at what created those numbers is, as has already stated by PoilicyGuy, really a case of silly nonsense.

This is in no way to diminish the severity of the crimes this guy is accused of, but I have no idea what Stuff mean here.

Today's is from the Beacon (Whakatane). An old building, occupied by a restaurant and a photography and framing business, is going to be demolished in the nearish future. The article consistently gets the names of both businesses wrong.

Man who went missing in Lake Tikitapu found dead

Not a pleasant story, but the photo is of Lake Rotoiti, not Tikitapu.

The same mislabelled photo was also used in this article.

It wasn’t being “towed” and it didn’t “crash”. It was being “lifted” and it was “dropped”. The headline makes it sound like it was flying and has a crew aboard. Even for the media’s standards this was idiotic.
Bonus: it “crashed and fell”. lol.

This popped up for me on the Stuff homepage

Closing it and scrolling down the page I'm presented with this crud

Now I appreciate that it costs a lot of money to run a 'news' entity and website but surely there must be some ethical limits to the advertising that you're prepared to promote, especially when purporting to be trustworthy.

Stuff Quiz:

You'd think they could at least list ONE OTHER Italian city to at least make it SLIGHTLY challenging...

What concerns me more is that when I did this quiz (at about 7am) less than 75% had the correct answer.  Doesn't give me much faith in the geography knowledge of the Stuff audience.

From this article:

Now I'm no zoologist or claim to have any expertise in large felines, but I suspect they're missing a zero, possibly two.
