Finally building the Lego Saturn V I bought myself for my birthday after three months of staring at the box. Very impressive. Very big.

No comments about having to buy my own birthday presents please. And no comments about size either...

"Only" three months?  I think I'm up to three years of it still being unopened and stacked with the Apollo Lunar Module and the Shuttle.  When I got the Saturn V kit, I had a cat who would have inspected progress but left the kit and completed models alone.  Now I have two "kittens" (two years old) who would inspect very closely, push it off whatever it was sitting on and in the case of one of them, try and eat half the pieces.

Nothing wrong with buying ones own birthday presents.  Guaranteed to get exactly what you want at least.  :-)

Oh, I certainly don't need the help of cats to push things over, though I haven't got as far as the eating bit. Yet.

What about the supremely phallic nature of the thing you're erecting?

If you want phallic check out Blue Origin.

Oh, believe me I have.

Bring a bit of Leslie Philips to mind, for some no doubt weird reason.

In particular this video, from some Australian news program where the presenters can't keep a straight face.

Of course Austin Powers did the rocket jokes best.

I know that I shouldn't laugh, but ...

BBC News - Typo sends millions of US military emails to Russian ally Mali

today

Millions of US military emails have been mistakenly sent to Mali, a Russian ally, because of a minor typing error.

Emails intended for the US military's ".mil" domain have, for years, been sent to the west African country which ends with the ".ml" suffix.

Some of the emails reportedly contained sensitive information such as passwords, medical records and the itineraries of top officers.

The Pentagon said it had taken steps to address the issue ....

Very Yes Minister

The NZ public's cynical reaction to Countdown supermarkets' intended name change and the $400M they will be spending on it.

Reading a description of how to execute Kruskal's Algorithm:

In Kruskal’s algorithm, sort all edges of the given graph in increasing order. Then it keeps on adding new edges and nodes in the MST if the newly added edge does not form a cycle. It picks the minimum weighted edge at first at the maximum weighted edge at last.

and thinking:

Then it rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.

Ah, my apologies, MST = minimum spanning tree. It should all make sense now.

I’m sure I’m late to the party but..

What3words.

Just totally amazing. Navigation that actually takes you to exactly where you want to go and allows you to share any location - anywhere on the planet - with just three words.

Just astonishing.

For anyone who hasn't seen this, what it does is take GPS coordinates as a binary encoding, uses it as an index into a wordlist, and gives you three words from there that encode the binary value. At the other end it does the reverse. To use it you need a smart phone, network connectivity, and a custom app.

Now if only there was some other way to use a smart phone with network connectivity to give a location...

Edited to add: Looks like the parody site what3f..ks is no longer online, but https://www.fourkingmaps.co.uk/ still is. NSFW.

It’s quite astonishing. I’ve never found the likes of Apple or Google maps especially accurate - for example Apple thinks my house address should take you to the middle of our paddock. If you drive down our drive it keeps saying “return to the route”!

In the USA (don’t know about here) Subaru have it in the car’s apps.
