SJB:

LA Confidential 8.5/10 DVD

Still a great watch with Guy Pearce, Russel Crowe, Kevin Spacey etc on top form.

Interesting story line, strong characters, and great atmosphere. What more can you want?

I love the noir genre - I happened to re-watch this recently and agree with your rating.

In the same vein but, rather than being made in the style, is actually an old movie, is Sunset Boulevard (1950).

I don't normally go for 'old' movies but Sunset Boulevard is a very good watch.

A more modern noir interpretation is The Last Seduction. It has twists and turns to keep you interested and Linda Fiorentino alternates between utterly sexy and ruthless.

@afe66: Have you trued Iron Fury on youtube ?

This movie was released in some markets as T-34. Just watched it on Amazon Prime (US) and it's a really worthy 6.5/10

I'll definitely give Sunset Boulevard a go. I see it was directed by Billy Wilder and stars William Holden. He was a great actor and starred in one of my favorite films of all time Network.

Watched Enola Holmes on Netflix NZ the other day.

Went into it with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

Enola Holmes on Netflix - The main plot/story was not the best but it was a good entertaining movie. 6.5/10

Terminator Dark Fate on Neon - Simply avoid this one. Extremely poor acting. Poorly written script. 2/10

A very under rated actor. Bridge on the River Kwai as the counter point to Alec Guinness was stellar.

Bill & Ted Face the Music. Just an incoherent mess that, for the most part, looked like it was filmed over a long weekend for $150. If you have fond memories of enjoying Bill & Ted in your youth, this should be a hard pass. And if you've never seen the first two, or didn't like them, an even harder pass. Just don't watch it. 1/10 (I bumped it up from zero because of the prosthetics in the prison scene which I thought were fairly amusing - the only time I even smiled slightly during the entire film).

EDIT: It's sitting on 82% approval and "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, which absolutely astounds me.

Agree. I loved Bill and Ted way back when. I had reservations before watching Face the Music, but hoped I would be wrong. I now regret it.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Sorkin, for better and worse. Some nice dialogue and an absolutely outstanding cast. As always a bit preachy but a good watch.

Hmm Cool I had been hanging out for some Sorkin. It's about time for a new TV series too hopefully :)

Wife wanted to watch this other day... I read about the trial before and thought this would be a "heavy" watch - compared to The West Wing and Newsroom kind of content...

Yeah, actually I had the exact same thought when I saw it advertised but I wasn't aware it was done by Sorkin of whom I am a huge fan, so I will probably give this a shot.

I hope he doesn't do another tv show. The last two have been bitter preachy nonsense, which is why they didn't rate well. I can do without another sermon that network tv is dumb or a sketch tv show that doesn't have good jokes.

His films are better, probably because he has less control and generally focusses on what he is brilliant at, writing dialogue.

I wouldn't characterise this as heavy, the degree of absurdity of the trial takes care of that. It's a serious film but it's also written by Sorkin. It's not as pretentious as the Newsroom either which makes it easier to watch.

I couldn't disagree more, I love his shows. I tend to be easily able to ignore the preachy if I ever find it that, which I don't, that often.

If you don't like them, you know it's 100% optional to watch them right? :) He can make them for the rest of us who enjoy them, and you can just not partake :)
