TVNZ One News tonight reporting on Artemis II:

“When they approach the Earth they’ll be travelling at 40,000 kph - but will soon slow down when the parachute opens”.

TVNZ reporter just outside Canberra: “They’re being tracked by this huge satellite dish - which works like a mobile phone - just a lot bigger”.

FFS.

That would be a good example of why I stopped watching the TV news as these days it is more like infotainment. I was also getting a sore throat from me shouting at the content.

No wonder people are so sceptical of our media.

I suspect the quoted 40,000 kph velocity is prior to re-entry where a parachute would have absolutely zero effect due to lack of atmosphere (air molecules)  plus the heat generated during re-entry would turn any deployed parachute to ash.

It's the re-entry process where most of the speed is lost and not by the deployment of the parachute.

In the event they were doing 40,000 kph after re-entry deploying the parachute at that speed will probably slow them to about 39,999 kph before the parachute parts company from the capsule.

The parachute is only deployed when the capsule containing the astronauts is in the very last stages of the descent to allow a soft landing in the sea.

I really must become familiar with all the features of my mobile phone so that I too can track space rockets. Duh!!!!!!!!!!!

All of that is precisely why I posted the first quote - and I assumed nobody here needed it to be explained.

I have not seen it. TVNZ news has several science oriented reporters it could have used for the broadcast. I can only assume it was an editorial decision not to use those people.

Exactly - that was also sort of implicit in my post. I tried to find a link to that specific news story from yesterday’s 6pm news but couldn’t find it.

Geektastic: Herald: ” Four relatives to stand trial for death of woman found floating in plastic”

Missing comma but kind of acceptable contraction for headlines. This one is not bad for grammar. NZHerald:

"Stolen car with dog inside sparks dangerous high-speed chase in Auckland"

It was slightly worse this morning ; ).
