Regards,
Old3eyes
I've decided to watch the first episode, on streaming.
It's not even 720 I'd say. Everything is so blocky.

old3eyes: Prefer the 30 minute format. Pity the week news wasn't as well. Most overseas main news networks just have a 30 minutes evening news followed buy a 30 minute local news and weather.
Probably not enough local news in each region to make up a 30 minute slot. I recall regional news was scrapped by TVNZ in the 1990s as it was expensive to produce for a fairly small (local) audience.
There is some very interesting editorial commentary from Mark Jennings in this morning's Newsroom Pro email. He presents good evidence that WBD are pursuing a strategy of focusing on cheap foreign content and not providing any local programming except in the unlikely scenario where it is fully funded by NZ on Air.
The 6pm news was considered to be an important offering because it provides an audience 'lead-in' to the rest of the evening's programming, but what if there is nothing of any substance to lead in to? I predict that this is all going to end in tears, with the new Stuff bulletin cancelled within a year, likely coinciding with WBD ending linear broadcasting in NZ.
Say what you want but for me the 6PM TV news is not meeting the needs of most of the population.
Whenever I accidentally have the 6PM news on while channel surfacing, I already know the stories and the news itself as it's been circulated online for hours beforehand.

I don't watch TV News as usually get my news through The Guardian, The New York Times and locally at NZ Herald/Stuff.
I decided to watch the first episode and I thought the stories about the Black Power member graduation and the Chinese corrections employee being questioned about accessing Chinese inmates' records were nicely done.

People in some jobs dont have the ability to be online during the day, so will not know of these things. So for the ever shrinking disconnected offline demographic the TV news is their first and only informing of those events.
While the target audience is still there it makes sense to outsource making it to someone that will make it for you to retain viewers that will lead into some lego show that had a few people on twitter excited about.

I was about to say something similar. I don't normally read news online during the day and if I do it's normally Stuff which is full of fluff pieces. So to sit down in the evening and receive a curated set of news items works for me.
I am an old person and I like watching the news. I'm not sure why. Maybe just because I grew up with it. I am also computer literate and I access many local and overseas news sites but I still like watching the news. To me it is almost more a form of entertainment than information. I used to enjoy reading the paper but I have moved past that and now do my reading on-line. I think what appeals to me about the news is the convenient overview of multiple subjects. Sometimes I discover items of interest that I would have otherwise missed and I can then turn to other sources for more details. If there was no more news at 6 or whenever, I would miss it. I already miss the news at noon and 5.30.

I found it odd this morning not having the three breakfast show on.
Tried the TV 1 breakfast show - absolutely hated it. Don't like the presenters or the style in which it's done.
Feels like it's aimed at a generic 70+ demographic.
I think it'll be the radio in the mornings from now on, for me.
Didn't mind the weekend bulletins at 6pm on Three News. Laura Tupou is experienced and professional, as are the other mebers of the team, but I felt like the liove crosses they did (especially for the rugby) were done on a mobile phone.
Just had that whole "slightly off-kilter and a bit low-rent" feel to it.

My main news consumption is Morning Report on the bus going to work, and then Checkpoint on the way home. I get that a lot of people work from home now, so I can understand the appeal of a television news bulletin for that crowd.

Ditto, woke up switched on Three, felt sad. Switched to One, don’t like the presenters or the style so it’s radio for me also.
Evening news, will wait and see but not holding my breath. It feels like everything is changing for the worst and on the cheap.
My favorite local news was The South Tonight, Bryan Allpress and Rodney Bryant. Last program was in 1974.
